The Blue Jackets faced a classic “trap” game tonight against the Carolina Hurricanes. And sure enough, the Jackets wandered into a danger zone and spent the first two periods trying to yank their pant leg out of the Hurricanes’ clench.
When they finally got loose, the Blue Jackets were off and running, much to the delight and relief of the 14,850 in Nationwide Arena.
Rookie winger Nikita Filatov broke the ice and a three-goal third period led the Jackets to a 3-2 win over the lowly Hurricanes, who have dropped 12 in a row.
Jared Boll and Rick Nash also scored for the Blue Jackets, who potted three in a span of 2:41 early in the the third to gain control.
Goaltender Steve Mason was very, very good in goal for the Blue Jackets. He made 24 saves, and was particularly sharp early in the game when the Blue Jackets were getting outplayed.
A scary moment early in the first.
Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward had his left leg inadvertantly sliced by the right skate of Blue Jackets goaltender Rick Nash as Nash came through the goal crease at 7:25 of the first period. It was an innocent looking play, but Ward went off slowly and with assistant, leaving a trail of blood behind him.
He was stitched up at Riverside Methodist Hospital and will remain there overnight as a precaution, likely flying back to Raleigh, N.C., on Sunday.
Carolina coach Paul Maurice said Ward’s injury was “significant.” Sadly, this might rule him out of contention to play for Team Canada at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
