With Cam Ward battling a left leg injury and the Hurricanes sitting last in the Eastern Conference, Carolina GM Jim Rutherford is actively looking to upgrade his roster.
Ward, who suffered a laceration of the left leg in the first period of Saturday's loss to Columbus, will miss an undisclosed period of time.

Rutherford told the Raleigh News & Observer he may try to trade or sign another goaltender.

The Ottawa Sun, meanwhile, reports the Hurricanes are willing to trade Ray Whitney and Joe Corvo.

Whitney, however, has a no-movement clause and it's unlikely such a move will be made.

The Sun also hints the Hurricanes could make a change on the bench, having Ron Francis step in for Paul Maurice.

Guess how much faith I have in whatever the Ottawa Sun has to say. No. Guess.

haha...no thanks. although he didnt do too bad in NJ...

I could see them move corvo, but not whitney. He is considered part of the core and JR is pretty commited to him.

It wouldnt surprise me if Francis took over. Everyone thought that was gonna happen last year anyways. Even with everything that has happened (or lack there of) over the past month...I still like Coach Mo. Hes a great coach....its truly unexplainable whats going on in Raleigh right now. It just aint the coach...knowhutimean?

Switching coaches to a guy that is already on the bench, rarely works in the long run. So I wouldn't go that route if I were Rutherford.

But with Ward going down and Leighton not exactly emanating a lot of confidence, a deal for a stop gap netminder may need to be the first move this team makes.
