QUOTE
Randy Youngman of the Orange County Register wrote the Maple Leafs want Giguere to mentor rookie Jonas Gustavsson.

An added bonus for Giguere would be being re-united with his goaltending coach Francois Allaire.

The Leafs would pick up Giguere's contract for the rest of this season and next, while Toskala would be headed the other way to finish out the rest of his remaining contract as he can become a UFA after this season.

If the deal comes to fruition, it will increase the fantasy value of Jonas Hiller who will be the undisputed number one in Anaheim and lower the value of Giguere, who will back up Gustavsson in Toronto, unless Gustavsson slumps.

Even though I didn't think Giguere would come to Toronto, now that im thinking about it, he would be a great mentor for the monster, for the simple fact, he plays EXACTLY like him.

1. This rumor is so easy to make. Hell I posted it weeks ago just by looking at team depth charts and realizing that Burke has a good relationship with ANaheim and the Ducks would like to clear his salary.

2. Picking up Giggy's salary now would handcuff the team going forward. Just look at the other threads in which we discuss how much cap room we have next year. Gustavsson is an RFA who is going to receive a sizeable raise.

3. Why bother trading for a 6+ million dollar backup? When I formulated the rumor it was to have Giggy as the starter. With Gustavsson showing some real class I no longer think Giggy is needed. We could find another NHL goalie for cheaper or just keep MacDonald up who played well in his last two starts.

4. The whole concept of "mentor" is bogus IMO. Who is Giguere??? He was a journeyman goalie until he found his niche in Anaheim and he has been up and down since. Gustavsson is already a goalie who has played professional hockey in arguably the second best league in the world and done so well. He is 24 so he is more mature as a man, we have plenty of vets already on the team and Francois Allaire working with him. What the heck could Giguere possibly do for Gustavsson that would be worth 6+ million in cap space for two years?

Frankly the only way the deal would make sense to me is if Toskala was bundled with say Mayers or someone else who is UFA and then dump for Giguere who Anaheim would have to overpay to be rid of. Then the Leafs would set Giguere as the starter while Gustavsson takes his time. But as it looks not the Monster may be headed for the starting role sooner rather than later so it is m0ore economical to just ride out Toskala's contract and clear him this summer. Better yet, deal him for a mid to late round draft pick at the deadline to a club looking for some depth.

Better yet get Toskala moved with Blake and you have a real winner.

If Giguere was playing well and not suffering from groin injuries, I would think of it as a dumb deal but since he is suffering from groin injuries I think this is the perfect opportunity to trade him.

He's a 6+ Mil backup who lost the starting role healthy or not and he still has another year on his contract. Trading him for Toskala straight up would be an amazing move for them. THey would pick up a couple million to work with for the playoffs this year and then they could just let Tosk go as he is a UFA this summer and spend the 6 mil they free up on other positions. I can't see how Anaheim could lose unless of course Hiller gets hurt but even then Toskala is a decent goalie on a good team as he showed in San Jose.

I dunno Tosk has lost a lot of confidence being with Toronto. He may not be the same. Burke isn't stupid unless we do a Blake and Tosk for Giggy then I doubt anything will happen.

The point would be Anaheim would want to be rid of Giguere's restrictive contract more than they would want to get fair value for him. Remember when Fletcher dealt McCabe and a 4th rounder to Florida for Mike Van Ryn? That was an overpayment to be rid of McCabe's contract. Despite Toskala's poor performance for the Leafs remember what he would be moving into. He would be going to a competitive West Coast team, an environment he thrived in before and he would be a backup which is a role he also had success with.

Giguere is not interested in being anybody's backup.

But he isn't good enough to be anyone's starter either.
