The Wings... and the Playoffs...

wings playoffs history 21 consecutive years
Growing up a Wings fan one might be able to say that I was spoiled as far as having a good team to root for. The Wings have one of the longest streaks of continued excellence with the achieving the feat of getting into the NHL playoffs for the 21st consecutive year. That's a lot of post season hockey.

Infact, the Detroit Red Wings facebook page just posted up a photo of the illustrious "Al The Octopus" that was being re-assembled outside the entrance of Joe Louis Arena... he looks like he has taken a little bit of a beating from the previous years.

I know there was a discussion in the Wings forum as to if the Red Wings were considered a "Dynasty". Lets figure it this way... the way that the NHL is constructed now, it is virtually impossible to hold a 'Dynasty' from what hockey teams used to be. The Maple Leafs, Canadians, Oilers, Islanders... it was a completely different time in the hockey world, and they all benefited from it.

But to live in the past... is one of the darnest things to do. I know myself, I like to think of the back to back cup wins in 97 and 98... but to think about it now? That was 14/15 years ago. I'll occasionally go pull up a video of the Wings / Av's rivalry from back in the day, and still get chills going down my spine when I think about how much this impacted hockey. But then you've got to ask yourself, "Why in the world am I trying to hold onto that?" The game of hockey has completely changed... what worked back then does not work now, and the only way to continue to be a winning team is to adapt to all the changes. One of the teams that has been able to do that... is the Red Wings. Through drafting, management, player development, and a great structure in general... the Wings have really done an amazing job at handling what has been thrown at them. Has it been a fluke? Nope. Its been proven that the Wings are a good, consistent team, who always seem to have what it takes to get the job done.

Or at least... enough to get into the playoffs.
