Panthers coach Pete DeBoer said it was a "mutual decision" between him and injured winger David Booth (concussion) not to have Booth travel on this three-game trip, which includes a stop in his hometown for Friday's game against the Detroit Red Wings.

DeBoer said it was made because Booth has suffered a setback in his rehab after increasing the intensity of his exercise last week. For now, he has stopped exercising.

"We've kind of taken our foot off the gas and given him a few days off before we look to go back at it again," DeBoer said. "But that's anticipated. We knew going through this process there was going to be good days and bad. You just have to take them in stride."

On staying back in South Florida, DeBoer added: "He can get the proper amount of rest and he has facilities there to do more than he can do on the road and in hotels."

DeBoer said Booth is not skating right now nor has he skated since the concussion Oct. 24 in Philly.

Concussions are not something you want to rush back from...just talk to Brian Pothier.

That's too bad. I know the club wanted to bring Booth along for their trip to Detroit, given that he's from the area. The previous time the Panthers played in Detroit, David was out with an injury as well.

I think we'll get him back, but probably not until after the New Year. Another 4-5 weeks should do the trick.

Reading up on this before, he is much more vulnerable to another concussion now.

Brian Westbrook came back last week (NFL) after a couple of weeks off and got another concussion.

Booth should really take his time, the way Simon Gagne did a couple of years back, maybe even take the rest of the year off.

This only serves to continue to fuel my anger at this whole thing.

I wish the best for Booth, but this just still stings.

I keep hearing from my friend who is really close to the team that he isn't improving much. He still gets daily headaches and still doesn't have his vision normal yet. I'm just saying, don't be overly surprised if we don't see him until next year.

Hate to say it, but I think Imber is right on this one. Even if he comes back in say, February, there's no way he'll be in game shape. Time for our new ownership and GM to show the fans a little something. We need a pivotal scorer. Let's get the rumour mill going, Cliff and Stu...

Unfortunately, at this point, getting a scorer means giving up some serious assets. From the interview with Stu, it didn't seem like he was down with purchasing a big time scorer. I HATE HATE HATE that we are ALWAYS behind the 8-ball on getting scorers!!!!! You don't need to purchase a LeCavalier or an Iginla to make a splash. We made 2 amazing signings with Stillman and Reino. Combined they make less than your average superstar. We just need more of that!!! Look at everyone who is/has had career resurgence with other teams:
Max Afinogenov (big time!!!)
Alex Tanguay
Jussi Jokinen (2 years ago I know)
Sergei Samsonov (although he's collapsing under Maurice)
even Matt Pettinger is having a nice little comeback under the Canucks (6GP, 1G/1A, +2)

Why can't we look at our roster, realize we're relying on basically hope that at least one or more of these guys can develop like they were supposed to, and spend the money to purchase some depth? But that's an argument for another thread (one that we Cats fans unfortunately have had MANY, MANY TIMES!!!!). We should invite the new owners to our site...

Ok venting is over. By the way, anyone else upset/notice that Booth's injury also will take him off the U.S. Men's Olympic Roster?

Latest blog reports are saying for the first time DeBoer noted that Booth may not be back this season. I had a feeling from around the start of the injury that this would be the case. They better bring police escorts for Richards in March.

I think its even worse that Richards completely got away with it. It was clearly headhunting and the league let's him walk. I hate the double standard.

He should take all the time he needs to feel symptom free.

If this story doesn't open some eyes to the seriousness of head trauma ( and stories like Reg Fleming) don't know what it will take.

I just typed out a long response, but I give up now on trying to make a case for making hitting safer, and avoiding injuries like this.

This situation is just upsetting and for it to be happening to Booth, a guy who works 100% all the time and just effing loves to play hockey, really pisses me off even more. But of course, because it happened to the Panthers, and to a guy barely anyone knows about, and because the perp is a "star" in this league who is a "clean player", we're all supposed to just believe it was a clean hit.

I was most saddened when the announced the US team and was angry that Booth didn't get his moment had he been selected to make the team.

Coach Pete DeBoer said Sunday that he expects injured winger David Booth(notes) to return to the lineup sometime this season, although because of the injury he isn’t sure when that will be.

On Saturday, DeBoer told reporters Booth was a “wild card” who may not be back this season.

DeBoer stepped away from those comments Sunday and reiterated that Booth hasn’t suffered any setbacks in his return to the ice.

“He’ll be back, but I don’t know when,” DeBoer said.

Booth, who led the team in goals last season, was knocked unconscious by Mike Richards(notes) on Oct. 24 in Philadelphia. The Panthers have been making sure Booth is taking things slow, as he had a setback in November after trying too hard. The Panthers are taking no risks with the popular winger—one who is the team’s highest paid forward after signing a six-year deal this past offseason.

“We want to make sure David is part of this franchise for a long time,” DeBoer said.

Booth is still on track to return this season, however, after an injury like this and so much time off, not sure how effective he will be this season, but the sooner he gets back out there, sooner the rebuilding can start.

Unfortunate to be real honest. I thought Booth was a good kid. He deserves better then to have his career ruined by concussions.
