All Proceeds Will Benefit Childhood Leukemia Foundation and Teammates for Kids

The Ducks announced today that ‘Stache Gear, a new apparel line created by Ducks right wing George Parros, will launch this Friday, Nov. 27 at the Anaheim Ducks Team Store. Immediately following the club’s contest on Friday versus the Chicago Blackhawks at Honda Center (1:05 p.m.), Parros will join Ducks fans at the Team Store (located on the East side of the building) in celebration of his original line of hats and t-shirts for both men and women. All proceeds from the ‘Stache Gear line will benefit two charities close to Parros’ heart: the Childhood Leukemia Foundation and Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids.

“I thought incorporating a mustache design into my new line of hats and t-shirts would be a light-hearted and fun way to raise funds for my two favorite nonprofits,” said Parros. “I would like to thank the Ducks for their support in this charitable cause.”

'Stache talking with George Parros

Anaheim Ducks right wing George Parros is a lamb-barbecuing, punch-throwing, occasionally Times-blogging, professional-hockey-playing Princeton grad. And for a few months every year, the long-locked, massively mustachioed enforcer endures looking like a Yanni impersonator so he can donate his hair to a group that will use it to make wigs for children battling cancer.

This year’s George Parros Cut for the Kids is slated for Dec. 14, but before that, he's weaving a new strand into his particular brand of follicular fundraising: the launch of ‘Stache Gear, his very own apparel line, which goes on sale on Black Friday, exclusively at the Anaheim Ducks Team Store.

All proceeds from the two styles of mustache-festooned ball caps and four styles of T-shirts (two men's and two women's), all of which retail for $25 each, will benefit the Childhood Leukemia Foundation and Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids Foundation.

I caught up with Parros by phone before practice recently to discuss his charitable activities, his foray into fashion and to trace the history of the signature upper lip adornment he believes to be “the physical embodiment of all that is manly.”

How long have you had the mustache?

I’ve had one on and off for a long time, but this is probably my fourth straight year. I’ve had it since before I was with the [Anaheim] Ducks.

What first prompted you to grow one in the first place? Did your dad sport a ’stache?
He had one when I was born, I think. And when my sister was born. But he didn’t while we were growing up. But I was always a big hockey fan, and I remember being fascinated with the mustaches. It’s a rich
tradition in hockey that’s kind of fallen by the wayside, so I thought it was a cool thing to try and bring back.

'Stache Gear to help foundations for kids

George Parros is far removed from the runways in Paris, but let's give the Anaheim Ducks tough guy credit for having the gumption to throw himself into the fashion world.

OK, fashion might be a stretch, but last week the 29-year-old winger launched the 'Stache Gear apparel line of T-shirts and hats with his personalized mustache as the trademark insignia. The 'Stache Gear went on sale at the Ducks' team store this past Friday after Anaheim's 3-0 win over visiting Chicago, and much to his relief, the items were a hit.

All the proceeds from the 'Stache Gear line go to George Parros' two favorite charities: the Childhood Leukemia Foundation and Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids.

Parros' biggest fear was showing up at the launch and not selling anything. He put in a lot of hours -- and some of his own dime -- setting up the charitable clothing line. The time leading up to the launch was nerve-racking.

"Yes, it was," the Princeton grad told ESPN.com on Monday. "I've been designing it and trying to get it off the ground since last summer. I had to start an LLC and go through all kinds of government offices to get the right paperwork and all sort of stuff like that. The designing took a long time. So, when you're done and ready to go, you're worried about whether anybody is going to buy it and if it's going to be a big flop."

Then, as he was sitting on the bench during Friday's matinee game, the PA announcer told the crowd about the 'Stache Gear launch later that day. Parros wanted to crawl under the bench.

"That was embarrassing," he said with a laugh. "At least all the money is going to charity, so I can take some flak as long as we raise a couple of dollars."

The 'Stache Gear has brought in $7,500 in sales since the launch Friday, with all proceeds going to his two favorite charities: the Childhood Leukemia Foundation and Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids.
