The break has proved to be valuable for several of the team's wounded. Ossi Vaananen and Riley Cote took part in the skate today and are hoping to return sooner rather than later. Danny Briere has not yet skated with the team, but is hoping to get back on the ice by the end of the week and has not ruled himself out to play against his old team, the Sabres, on Friday.

They interviewed Briere and he said he was trying to play Friday but to me, it seemed like he didn't sound too optimistic. We'll see how practice goes the next couple of days.

Also, I talked to Randy Jones tonight and he said his hip is feeling a little better. He said he would be back in 2 or 3 weeks. I'm pumped.

They asked Ryan Parent about his injury, but he never gave a timetable or progress report. I'm assuming he will be back around his original timetable around Christmas.

The news was mixed on the injury front yesterday.
Center Danny Briere (groin) skated for about 40 minutes before practice and did not sound optimistic about returning Friday in Buffalo.

Defenseman Ossi Vaananen (finger) took part in practice at the Skate Zone in Voorhees but was even more of a long shot to return this weekend.

The most positive news came from enforcer Riley Cote, who is recovering nicely from a mild muscle tear in his left side, suffered during a warm-up routine Nov. 6 in Ottawa.

He practiced yesterday, and coach John Stevens expects the winger to be able to return Nov. 29 in Toronto, the first game in which he is eligible to come off the long-term injury list.

"It kills me watching the games," Cote said. "Just the way the injury happened is kind of embarrassing."

Center Darroll Powe, recovering from a mild concussion, also returned to practice yesterday. He replaced Jared Ross, who was sent down to the Phantoms.

Briere, who has five goals in eight games, hopes to be able to practice with the club tomorrow.

He said that if he could practice without complications, he might able to play Friday, "but at the same time, if there's a setback or it doesn't improve, there's no sense risking it even though it's Buffalo and I'd like to be in the lineup."

Buffalo is Briere's former team.

As for Vaananen, he missed four games after having surgery on his right index finger, then tore the stitches Thursday in his first game back. He skated but avoided contact yesterday.

Specifically, defenseman Ossi Vaananen gets a chance to recoup from a fractured finger in his right hand and is expected back in the lineup Friday at Buffalo. Vaananen said both he and club were embarrassed because his stitches broke last week in Pittsburgh and there was danger of infection. He said that won’t happen again.

“I’m fine, and hopefully, this time, we learned something and we’ll let it heal properly,” he said. “It was a minor setback. The thing didn’t hold up.”

Danny Briere, on the other hand, isn’t a sure bet. He is skating every other day on his own but is still nursing a sore, left groin. Briere would like three days on the ice where he is pain-free before returning to the lineup.

Put it this way. He will err on the side of caution, given he’s already had abdominal surgery only a month ago.

Flyers center Danny Briere and defenseman Ossi Vaananen updated their injuries on Thursday after the team got back to work at its practice facility with a morning skate.

Briere will miss Friday's game in Buffalo (7:30 p.m., CN8) and is doubtful to play at home on Saturday against the Coyotes (7:00 p.m., Comcast SportsNet).

Vaananen also declared himself as unlikely to play against the Sabres.

"My situation is a day-to-day kind of thing. When it comes to Friday, it's kind of doubtful," he said. "But hopefully soon, anyway. It's feeling pretty good and looking good, so it's getting stronger."

The Flyers also made a roster move on Friday, recalling forward Jonathon Kalinski from the Phantoms. Kalinski will be on the fourth line tomorrow night making his NHL debut.

Ossi Vaananen, out with a surgically repaired right index finger, is going to be a game-time decision. He said he is getting closer after having returned against Pittsburgh too early and popping the stitches in his incision.

He probably will play in at least one of the games this weekend.

Eddie Moran also said that Briere is shooting for Monday against Dallas.

Briere is clearly unhappy about the lack of significant progress in getting back on the ice. “Same as the last few days, frustrating, not much improvement,” Briere said. “There’s nothing I can do.” Briere is unable to push off with any kind of momentum without incurring pain. “If I could circle around all game, I’d be fine,” he said. “I can’t stop and start. I’ve never had an injury as frustrating as this one.” … Randy Jones (torn labrum/right hip) and Ryan Parent (torn labrum/right shoulder) are both back on the ice skating and shooting, on their own. Neither has a definitive time table on a return.

Not good if Briere is making no progress. I figure Jones will be back mid-December, Parent probably New Years to ASG.

Doubtful that Briere will play Monday.

Flyers center Danny Briere, sidelined by a strained left groin, is not making much progress and will not play in tonight's game against Dallas at the Wachovia Center.
"It's frustrating because there's not much improvement," Briere said at the Skate Zone in Voorhees yesterday. "After the first two steps, it hits me. There's no power. I can't start and stop - and that's my game. I need to be quick and taking off and hitting holes, and right now I can't do that."

In Briere's absence, Mike Richards has moved to the top line with wingers Simon Gagne and Mike Knuble. With Briere sidelined, the Flyers have used a host of call-ups from the AHL Phantoms, the latest being Jon Kalinski.

The Flyers have won four straight and are 5-0-1 in their last six. Overall, the team is 8-2-1 without Briere - abdominal surgery sidelined him earlier - as opposed to 1-4-3 with him in the lineup.

"Everybody has stepped up," Richards said.

After playing tonight against Dallas, the Flyers will play in Carolina on Wednesday. Briere will likely miss that game, too.

"Only my body will tell me when I'm ready to go," said Briere, who has five goals and four assists. "It's frustrating because I thought I'd be in the lineup last weekend. I want to play. I don't think I've ever had an injury as frustrating as this one, where it's taken this long."

"We don't want to rush him back and have him reinjure himself and be out even longer," coach John Stevens said. "We want him totally healthy so there's no reservations about keeping him in the lineup."

Stevens added there's a chance defenseman Ossi Vaananen, who has been sidelined with a finger injury, will return to the lineup tonight. He was rushed back after having surgery on his finger, and the stitches became torn, forcing him to miss more action.

I've never had stitches on my finger but one would figure they would tape that sucker up so it wouldn't tear.

from Chuck Gormley of the Courier-Post,

When Danny Briere suffered what the Flyers termed a “slight” pull in his left groin on Nov. 11 on Long Island, he thought a few days off the ice would allow the pull to heal.

Nearly two weeks later, Briere says he is no better today than he was last week and is growing concerned about what might be the problem.

“I have no power,” he said Sunday, after skating at the Skate Zone. “I can’t stop and start, and that’s my game. I need to be quick taking off and jumping into holes, and right now I can’t do that.”

Briere insists the slight tear in his groin is unrelated to the sports-hernia surgery he underwent Oct. 25. That surgery was expected to require three to four weeks of rehab, but Briere returned to the lineup in 16 days,

Tuesday, November 25

4:32 p.m.
Winners of their last five games (6-0-1 overall), the Philadelphia Flyers got back to work with an 11:00 a.m. practice this morning at the Virtua Center Flyers Skate Zone. Joining the team on the ice for the first time this season were injured defensemen Randy Jones and Ryan Parent, who have been out with a hip and shoulder injury, respectively.

FlyersTV: Jones/Parent/Briere speak | Stevens post-practice

Jones should return before Christmas, while Parent has the goal of being fully healthy by December 26.

"They've progressed to the point now where they could join us for practice," explained head coach John Stevens. "They didn't do everything, but they did as much as they could do. I know I talked to Jonesy and he's excited to be part of the group practicing."

"It's progressing every day, and I think that's why we took the next step and practiced with the team. It felt really good," added Jones.

Danny Briere, also battling injury, took to the ice again Tuesday and travelled with the team on its charter flight to Raleigh, North Carolina. It seems unlikely Briere will play Wednesday night against the Hurricanes (7:00 p.m., CN8), but his condition has improved nonetheless, he said.

"It's really tough to gauge. The last couple of days have been better days and I'm a lot more positive about it," he said. "That's the way it's been with this injury for the past two weeks. A couple days it improves and three or four days nothing happens. That's when you get a little down and get frustrated.

"I was expecting to play last Friday. That was the goal. I was far from being ready, so I don't want to get excited too quick. Right now, the last two days, I have seen a big improvement."

LW Riley Cote will come off the long-term injury list, but the torn cartilage in his rib cage will keep him out of this weekend's games, Stevens said. Cote could be back in the lineup Tuesday.
