<title>The Top 100 players in the NHL No. 59-40</title>
		<link>http://thenhlarena.com/topic/324847-the-top-100-players-in-the-nhl-no-59-40/</link>
<description><![CDATA[<p>These are my lists of the top 100 NHL players in the league. At any given time there are well over 600 players in the NHL. Injuries did not play a big factor on whether or not a player should be lower than he should. I am basing this list off consistency , intangibles , past and current peformance , skill and also potential. Like any list these are just opinions and it is subjective. I welcome all comments. I will break them down into 5 parts 100-80, 79-60, 59-40, 39-20 and 19-1.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>59. Craig Anderson: G Ottawa Senators 6'2 180LBS 24GP 12W .941% 1.69GAA 3SO&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Craig Anderson had an absolute ridiculous year and would have been the run away Vezina winner this year if he hadn't gotten hurt. He is the main reason the Sens got into the playoffs after losing their 3 top players for most of the year. This however is a very small sample size as Anderson has been around for awhile and has only shown to be a capable backup and that's it. But there is still no denying the great year he had this year and we will see if he can keep it up.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>58. James Neal: RW Pittsburgh Penguins 6'2 208LBS 40GP 21G 15A 36P +5&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Neal has really come on the last few years and become one of the better goal scorers in the league. He was always a solid scorer in Dallas but since coming to PIttsburgh , playing along side Malkin has helped him tremendously. He has a very accurate shot and can really pick his spots. He is one of the most dangerous weapons on the best power play unit in the league. He also uses his size to his advantage and can lay some good hits.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>57. David Backes: C Saint Louis Blues 6'3 225LBS 48GP 6G 22A 28P +5&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Blues captain had an off year in the goal scoring category but he is normally a 25-30 goal scorer. Backes isn't on this list because of his offensive abilites. He brings so much more to the table than what is in the box score. He is a great leader on and off the ice and he is one of the hardest hitters in the league. He will do whatever it takes to give his team a spark whether it be a fight or a big goal. He also is a very good defender and one of the most underrated faceoff men in the league.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>56. Taylor Hall: LW Edmonton Oilers 6'1 194LBS 45GP 16G 34A 50P +5&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The first overall pick in 2010 is really blossoming into a superstar in this league. He averaged over a point per game this season and until the last few weeks of the season , the Oilers had a chance at the playoffs this year because of Hall. He is a superb skater and will go right past any defenseman in the league. He is a great playmaker and has really good hands and deking skills. He has a very good hard and accurate shot and can beat any goalie in the league upstairs. He is also getting great in his own zone too. Look for Mr. Hall to skyrocket up these rankings in the next few years.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>55. Tyler Seguin: C Boston Bruins 6'1 182LBS 48GP 16G 16A 32P +23&nbsp;&nbsp; Seguin is a great two way player as evident by his career +53 rating in only 3 seasons. He is one of the funnest puck handlers to watch as he makes great defenseman look silly. He is already one of the best passers in the game. He has a very accurate shot and can score from literally any angle on the ice. His defense is superb at back checking and stick checking. He is a great skater also and is very fast.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>54. Jarome Iginla: RW Calgary Flames/ PIttsburgh Penguins 6'1 210LBS 44GP 14G 19A 33P -5&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Iginla got traded at the deadline to the Penguins and made them the cup favorite. He has been one of the best goal scorers over the past 15 years if not the best. He was a captain for a reason in Calgary as he is a great leader and teammate. He has a very heavy shot and is almost unfair when he onetimes shots. He will lay a big hit or fight , whatever it takes to help his team. He got traded to finally get a shot at a Stanley Cup and so far in the playoffs he is showing he is very hungry for it.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>53. Jonathan Quick: G Los Angeles Kings 6'1 214LBS 37GP 18W .902% 2.45GAA 1SO&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Quick had a bit of an off year in the regular season but thus far in the playoffs he is playing like the Conn Smythe winner he was last year that led the Kings to their first cup. He is a great butterfly goalie and is impossible to beat 5 hole or anywhere down low. He is as consistent as any goalie in the league and is one of the best at controlling rebounds. If Quick keeps playing the way he is these playoffs we could be seeing a repeat for the Kings.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>52. Brent Burns : D/RW San Jose Sharks 6'5 225LBS 30GP 9G 11A 20P +0&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Burns moved up to winger near the halfway point of the season and it might've saved the Sharks season. As a defensemen Burns had one of the heaviest and most accurate shots. He was originally drafted as a forward and was moved to defenseman when he was with the Wild organization so he has always had the offensive skills. He is a huge hitter and unbelievably fast for his size. As a forward he brings a great front of the net presence and physical power forward. He also gives you everything he learned as a defenseman from blocking shots to stick lifting and he was a great defenseman in his own zone also.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>51. Alex PIetrangelo: D Saint Louis Blues 6'3 205LBS 47GP 5G 19A 24P +0&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Alex is one of the best young defenseman in the game. He has great offensive ability and is deadly on the power play. He is a great skater and puck mover out of his own zone. He is a great defenseman in his own zone also , whether it is blocking shots or engaging a player in the corner. As he gains more experience he will only climb higher on this list.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>50. Patrick Sharp: LW Chicago Blackhawks 6'1 199LBS 28GP 6G 14A 20P +8&nbsp;&nbsp; Sharp was injured this year , but he has come back and hasn't missed a beat in the playoffs. He has been a very consistent player his whole career with Philly and Chicago. He has a great accurate shot and will give you 30 goals every year. He is a good playmaker also and an underrated passer. He is great on the defensive side of the game also and is a very smart player.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>49. Tukka Rask: G Boston Bruins 6'3 169LBS 36GP 19W .929% 2.00GAA 5SO&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Rask had a really good year and the main reason the Bruins are one of the top teams in the East. He has shown to be a great goaltender in the small sample sizes we have seen over the last several years. He is great at his angles and rebound control. Rask could climb higher on this list if he shows he can put these numbers up for an entire season. Rask has made it easy on Bruins fans not having Tim Thomas this year.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>48. Dustin Brown: RW Los Angeles Kings 6'0 204LBS 46GP 18G 11A 29P +8&nbsp;&nbsp; If there is an exact clone of David Backes , it is Brown. They are so much alike it is ridiculous. Brown is a great leader and has great intangibles. He is a huge hitter despite his small size. He will fight for his teammates or to spark his team. Do not under estimate his offensive ability either though. He is a good goal scorer also and is great at getting to the dirty areas. He is solid in his defensive zone also.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>47. Evander Kane: LW Winnipeg Jets 6'2 195LBS 48GP 17G 16A 33P -3&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Kane has gotten better each year he has been in the league. He is a great power forward and is a physical player. He is a natural goal scorer and has a really heavy shot. Between him and Andrew Ladd , they almost got the Jets into the playoffs. He is a great skater and puck handler. If Kane wants to make it higher on this list he will have to improve on the defensive side of the game.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>46. Phil Kessel: RW Toronto Maple Leafs 6'0 202LBS 48GP 20G 32A 52P -3&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Kessel is one of the fastest players in the NHL and seems to always get behind defenses. He has really improved the last few years in Toronto. He is one of the better goal scorers in the game thanks to his quick release and accurate shot. He is a great playmaker and makes everyone around him better on the offense. The one thing that is keeping Kessel from being higher on this list is his defense. He sometimes looks disinterested unless he has the puck in the attacking zone.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>45. Patrick Marleau : C San Jose Sharks 6'2 220LBS 48GP 17G 14A 31P -2&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; It is hard to find a more consistent player than Marleau. He will give you at least 30 goals and 30 assists EVERY season. He has always been one of the fastest skaters in the league despite his size. The league hasn't seen someone his size with his speed since the great Mario. He is a very smart player and is always in the right place. He has a great accurate shot as evident by his 404 career goals. Some people will say he never lived up to the hype as the high draft pick but it is hard to argue with his production.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>44. Pekka Rinne: G Nashville Predators 6'5 205LBS 43GP 15W .910% 2.43GAA 5SO&nbsp;&nbsp; Rinne had another good year and is proving he is one of the top goalies in the game. He is hard to beat upstairs because of his size and wingspan. He is great at his angles and rebound control. He missed having Ryan Suter a lil bit as he faced more shots than normal. The Preds did not have a good year this year but Rinne was a lone brightspot.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>43. Marian Gaborik: RW New York Rangers / Columbus Blue Jackets 6'1 204LBS 47GP 12G 15A 27P -3&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Gaborik really had a down year this year as he couldn't get anything going in New York. He was traded so hopefully a change of scenery will help a very talented goal scorer. He is a top 5 fastest skater in the league and that is what makes him so dangerous. He is one of the best goal scorers over the past decade and there is not much doubt he will be back to his normal 30-40 goals.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>42. Logan Courture : C San Jose Sharks 6'1 200LBS 48GP 21G 16A 37P +7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Courture is showing he is one of the best all around centers in the game. He is good on faceoffs and in the defensive zone. He is a natural goal scorer and looks like he will score 30 goals every year. He is a great passer and puck handler also. He is a bright young star on an aging San Jose team that hopes they have a few cup runs left in them.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>41. Rick Nash: LW New York Rangers 6'4 219LBS 44GP 21G 21A 42P +16&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Rick Nash is the best power forward in the league and is the prototypical power forward. He is as consistent of a goal scorer as you will find in this league. The 5 time All star had a good debut campaign with the Rangers and improved his defense greatly due to the talent around him. He has not done good thus far in the playoffs and has been critiscized heavily for it. Something that needs to be taken into consideration is that when in Columbus he was rarely in the playoffs.</p>

<title>Vladimir Tarasenko: Bigger Role for 2014?</title>
		<link>http://thenhlarena.com/topic/324826-vladimir-tarasenko-bigger-role-for-2014/</link>
		<description><![CDATA[<p><a href='http://www.saintlouissports.com/vladimir-tarasenko-bigger-role-for-2014/' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://www.saintlouissports.com/vladimir-tarasenko-bigger-role-for-2014/</a></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<blockquote class="ipsBlockquote"><p>Tarasenko woke up the Blues fans at the start of the season with a few<br>
quick goals. Then he slowed down and before long he was hurt. He got to<br>
play in one playoff game against the Los Angeles Kings. What is in-store<br>
for the big Russian next year? “I was very impressed with his season,”<br>
GM Doug Armstrong said. “Now he has to go home and he has to come back<br>
in and be a player that we can count on. He left with a mandate that,<br>
‘Your name is on the board in an important spot now.’” Tarasenko played<br>
in just one playoff game in the Blues’ first-round exit against Los<br>
Angeles after producing eight goals and 19 points in 38 games during his<br>
rookie season.</p></blockquote>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I think that Tarasenko is a huge part of any success that the Blues' hope to have, they have talked this guy up like he has Ovie type skill and even better work ethic. So, Tarasenko has to be one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle if the Blues hope to actually take the next step.</p>

The Red Wings stole home-ice advantage and the Blackhawks now must win one of the next two contests to take it back. More importantly will be how Chicago responds Monday night, after Detroit dominated the puck and slowed down the Blackhawks' rush game at the same time. Chicago's 20 shots on goal in Game 2 was its least in a Stanley Cup Playoff game since April 27, 2009.</span></span></strong></p><p><strong>&nbsp;</strong></p><p><strong><span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="font-family:georgia, serif;">Team Scope:</span></span></strong></p><p><strong>&nbsp;</strong></p><p><strong><span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="font-family:georgia, serif;">Blackhawks:&nbsp;<a href='http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8473537' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Viktor Stalberg</a>&nbsp;is likely to get back in the Chicago lineup after being scratched the first two games because of a coaching decision. Stalberg is one of the fastest skaters in the NHL and fills out the Blackhawks' third line on the right wing, with&nbsp;<a href='http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8471254' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Bryan Bickell</a>&nbsp;on the left side and scrappy rookie&nbsp;<a href='http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8476381' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Andrew Shaw</a>&nbsp;in the middle. That line in particular gave Detroit some trouble this season, especially in the two games at Joe Louis Arena, and coach Joel Quenneville is hoping for a similar effect on Monday night. Chicago also needs to come up with a way to get its rush game going again, so it can keep constant pressure on goalie&nbsp;<a href='http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8470657' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Jimmy Howard</a>&nbsp;and create more scoring chances.</span></span></strong></p><p><strong>&nbsp;</strong></p><p><strong><span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="font-family:georgia, serif;">"I noticed the pace of their game was a lot higher," forward&nbsp;<a href='http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8469544' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Patrick Sharp</a>&nbsp;said of the Red Wings in Game 2. "Their compete level was higher and they clearly wanted that game more than we did. I mean, we wanted to win, but didn't play the way we felt … like we deserved to win. I think we can [play] a lot better than we did. To beat these guys, you've got to play hard from start to finish."</span></span></strong></p><p><strong>&nbsp;</strong></p><p><strong><span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="font-family:georgia, serif;">Red Wings:&nbsp;Detroit backed up what it preached after Game 1, when the Red Wings said tired legs from a grueling cross-country, seven-game conference quarterfinals series against the Anaheim Ducks was the biggest reason they were outskated by Chicago in a 4-1 loss in the series opener. Detroit looked like a different team in Game 2, outskating Chicago and paying better attention to the middle of the ice to help slow down the Blackhawks' attack. Howard had to make 19 saves, but many were timely and impressive.<a href='http--,,--//www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8477059' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Damien Brunner</a>,&nbsp;<a href='http--,,--//www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8474090' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Brendan Smith</a>,&nbsp;<a href='http--,,--//www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8471309' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Johan Franzen</a>&nbsp;and<a href='http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8470047' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Valtteri Filppula</a>&nbsp;all scored in the win.</span></span></strong></p><p><strong>&nbsp;</strong></p><p><strong><span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="font-family:georgia, serif;">"At the start of the year, we weren't a good team," coach Mike Babcock said. <blockquote class="ipsBlockquote"><p>The Detroit Red Wings needed a performance like the one they put on the ice Saturday at United Center.</p>
<p>After<br>
talking about their tired legs following a series-opening loss to the<br>
rival Chicago Blackhawks in Game 1 of the Western Conference Semifinals<br>
on Wednesday, the Red Wings needed to come out skating fast, hitting<br>
hard and putting on offensive pressure in waves.</p>
<p>That's exactly<br>
what they did. The Red Wings evened the best-of-7 series 1-1 with a 4-1<br>
win, seized home-ice advantage for the remaining five games, and gave<br>
the Blackhawks their first loss on home ice in the 2013 Stanley Cup<br>
Playoffs.</p>
<p>Now it's up to the Blackhawks to respond.</p>
<p>"They have the momentum right now, so we've got to get it back somehow," Chicago forward <a href='http://blackhawks.nhl.com/club/player.htm?id=8474141' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Patrick Kane</a><br>
said. "That starts with maybe letting this one slip behind us and<br>
getting ready for the next one. That's what we'll try to do and try to<br>
have a good start to Game 3."</p></blockquote>

The Ducks and Wings have been here before — playing six times in the postseason since 1997– but this time Anaheim was favored to win the series by a landslide.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;div id="attachment_39732" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 310px"&gt;&lt;a href="<a href='http://cdn.thehockeywriters.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/corey-perry.jpg' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://cdn.thehockeywriters.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/corey-perry.jpg</a>"&gt;&lt;img class="size-medium wp-image-39732" alt="corey perry anaheim ducks" src="<a href='http://d1l8737wcwfl1q.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/corey-perry-300x199.jpg' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://d1l8737wcwfl1q.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/corey-perry-300x199.jpg</a>" width="300" height="199" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;p class="wp-caption-text"&gt;Corey Perry blame game? (Gary A. Vasquez-US PRESSWIRE)&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;In the past, Detroits’ roster was stacked with future Hall Of Famers; &lt;strong&gt;Steve Yzerman&lt;/strong&gt;, &lt;strong&gt;Brendan Shanahan&lt;/strong&gt;, &lt;strong&gt;Nicklas Lindstrom&lt;/strong&gt;, &lt;strong&gt;Tomas Holmstrom&lt;/strong&gt;, and I can fire off an endless lists off all-stars that donned the Red Wing crest. The team known for it’s perennial players, it taking on a different path with some new faces. Now, the Wings rely heavily on mainly two highly-talented forwards; &lt;strong&gt;Pavel Datsyuk&lt;/strong&gt; and &lt;strong&gt;Henrik Zetterberg&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Anaheim, despite their recent success, will probably never compare to Hockey Town where winning isn’t just everything, it’s expected. However, with the Samuelis as their new owners, they’ve endeavored to keep the Ducks a playoff contender. Two monumental moves that prove that notion is the resigning of captain &lt;strong&gt;Ryan Getzlaf&lt;/strong&gt; and 2011 Hart Trophy recipient &lt;strong&gt;Corey Perry&lt;/strong&gt;; both being the heart of the team.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Unfortunately, Perry didn’t make much of an impact during this year’s playoffs, which I think was the deciding factor for the Ducks’ early first-round exit. There were a lot of young players who stepped up for Anaheim –&lt;strong&gt;Matt Beleskey&lt;/strong&gt;, &lt;strong&gt;Kyle Palmieri&lt;/strong&gt;, &lt;strong&gt;Nick Bonino&lt;/strong&gt;– in addition to Getzlaf and &lt;strong&gt;Jonas Hiller&lt;/strong&gt; putting out an honest effort. Perry’s inability to find the back of the net resulted in him only contributing with two assists in seven games against Detroit.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;h2&gt;It wasn’t for an entire lack of effort.&lt;/h2&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Perry was buzzing around &lt;strong&gt;Jimmy Howard&lt;/strong&gt; for the majority of the series –registering at least several shots a game– but he didn’t make those shots count. That was the difference. It doesn’t matter how many other teammates contribute. If a team doesn’t get production from their star player their season will be short-lived, which is why those specific players get paid the big bucks; to find ways to win when their team needs them.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;The Ducks were successful in shutting down the Red Wings’ top forwards, but couldn’t contain them in final two games of the series. &lt;a title="Detroit Red Wings Round One Player Report Cards" href="<a href='http://thehockeywriters.com/detroit-red-wings-round-one-player-report-cards/' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://thehockeywriters.com/detroit-red-wings-round-one-player-report-cards/</a>"&gt;Datsyuk and Zetterberg&lt;/a&gt; came up big in those games and that’s when Detroit started planning their itinerary for Chicago. Datsyuk had a goal and three points in Game 6. Zetterberg had a pair of goals and an assist and then came up with two points in the final Game 7.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Zetterberg and Datsyuk came through for their team when it mattered the most. The games the two were held off the scoreboard, the Ducks’ young guns pulled through for Anaheim. What Anaheim needed and what they didn’t get was Perry stepping up. Imagine what a goal or a few extra points from Perry could have meant for the Ducks.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;h2&gt;Thanks Corey for that early tee time.&lt;/h2&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;While some Anaheim players are probably sporting some plaid shorts and solid colored polo’s, I hope that some of players are giving Corey Perry a hard time and not just of his golf ensemble.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;For more information throughout the season follow me on twitter &lt;a href="<a href='http://www.twiitter.com/m_drinnenberg' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://www.twiitter.com/m_drinnenberg</a>"&gt;@m_drinnenberg&lt;/a&gt; and on Facebook &lt;a href="<a href='http://www.facebook.com/michelledrinnenberg' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://www.facebook.com/michelledrinnenberg</a>"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;here&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;h3&gt;Author information&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;div class="ts-fab-wrapper" style="overflow:hidden"&gt;&lt;div class="ts-fab-photo" style="float:left;width:64px"&gt;&lt;img alt='Michelle Drinnenberg' src='<a href='http://1.gravatar.com/avatar/35180741dadc7096acc3ed12696b8727?s=64&amp;d=http%3A%2F%2F1.gravatar.com%2Favatar%2Fad516503a11cd5ca435acc9bb6523536%3Fs%3D64&amp;r=PG' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://1.gravatar.com/avatar/35180741dadc7096acc3ed12696b8727?s=64&amp;d=http%3A%2F%2F1.gravatar.com%2Favatar%2Fad516503a11cd5ca435acc9bb6523536%3Fs%3D64&amp;r=PG</a>' class='avatar avatar-64 photo' height='64' width='64' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;!-- /.ts-fab-photo --&gt;&lt;div class="ts-fab-text" style="margin-left:74px"&gt;&lt;div class="ts-fab-header"&gt;&lt;div style="font-size: 1.25em;margin-bottom:0"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Michelle Drinnenberg&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;!-- /.ts-fab-header --&gt;&lt;div class="ts-fab-content" style="margin-bottom:0.5em"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="ts-fab-footer"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;!-- /.ts-fab-footer --&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;!-- /.ts-fab-text --&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;!-- /.ts-fab-wrapper --&gt;&lt;p&gt;This article was originally published at: &lt;a href="<a href='http://thehockeywriters.com' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://thehockeywriters.com</a>"&gt;The Hockey Writers&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;<br /><br /><a href='http://thehockeywriters.com/an-invisible-corey-perry-eliminated-the-anaheim-ducks/' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Read more from The Hockey Writers</a>]]></description>

<title>Where do the Canucks Go Now?</title>
		<link>http://thenhlarena.com/topic/324786-where-do-the-canucks-go-now/</link>
<description><![CDATA[&lt;p&gt;This is a guest post submitted by&nbsp;&lt;b&gt;Mr. Andres Ong.&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="color: #000000;"&gt;Hockey is one of the most popular and widely followed games in the world. Sports enthusiasts from all around the globe make every possible effort to be a part of this entertaining game, whether it is for fun or for making some money. People who are good at taking chances with their luck and know how to bet on sports often try their hands at gaining something by placing a wager on NHL. These people make use of sports betting websites to place online bets on their favorite team, while keeping the odds in mind. NHL hockey wagering is no less than a profession as it requires honing one’s betting skills. People generally learn how to wager on hockey by following the basics and strategies available at&nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="color: #000000;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: medium;"&gt;&lt;span style="text-decoration: underline;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;a href="<a href='http://www.wageronsports.com/wagering-strategy/nhl-hockey' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://www.wageronsports.com/wagering-strategy/nhl-hockey</a>" target="_blank"&gt;<a href='http://www.wageronsports.com/' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://www.wageronsports.com/</a>&lt;wbr /&gt;wagering-strategy/nhl-hockey&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="color: #000000;"&gt;. Despite following the established strategies, bettors tend to lose either due to their mistakes or by the sheer bad luck of the team they support. The case was no different with the Vancouver Canucks, who lost their spot in the playoffs at the hands of San Jose Sharks.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="color: #000000;"&gt;There is no easy and quick way back for the Canucks after having been eliminated in the playoffs. It is no less than a shock for the Canucks fan that their team, which was a finalist at the Stanley Cup two years ago, became the first one to clear their lockers and move out of the playoffs this year, after being dropped by the San Jose Sharks. After a really disappointing end at this year’s Big Game, there are certain things that the Canucks need to change for reserving their seat in the next season’s playoffs. If they want a result similar to the one they got five years ago, this would be the best time to review everything and make the necessary changes.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="color: #000000;"&gt;Deal with Alain Vigneault&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;No doubt, Vigneault has been a wonderful coach for the time he has been with the Canucks. However, this year’s&nbsp;&lt;a href="<a href='http://thehockeywriters.com/is-series-against-san-jose-a-must-win-for-vancouvers-alain-vigneault/' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://thehockeywriters.com/is-series-against-san-jose-a-must-win-for-vancouvers-alain-vigneault/</a>"&gt;loss could mean a lot for coach Alain Vigneault&lt;/a&gt; more than the other disappointments in the past. He has been seen more on the bench, rather than acting as a lifeguard for the team. The Canucks have been ranking low in the past year’s league standings and have hardly made through the playoffs. This year’s loss is definitely something that GM Mike Gillis needs to think about. The management is not really sure on this part as of now. It is not that the team management has never made any stronger decisions in the past; it is just a matter of concern for the management, if Alain was to leave.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Canucks should retain Luongo&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="color: #000000;"&gt;There have been rumors regarding the almost-final departure of&nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;a href="<a href='http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=669991' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=669991</a>"&gt;&lt;span style="color: #000000;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: medium;"&gt;Roberto Luongo&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;. It is highly unlikely that Luongo will be a part of the Vancouver Canucks for the next season. After experiencing a humbling loss at the hands of Kings and Sharks, it would be wise to think about trading Cory Schneider instead of Luongo. There would be several young legs keen on getting into the side in place of Schneider rather than Luongo, who has a huge amount of money left in his contract. Looking around for a younger goalie and training him as a healthy replacement for Luongo would be a nice and efficient move.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Get More NHL Regulars Ready&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="color: #000000;"&gt;The weaker offensive side of the Canucks has concurred with the inability of the team to train new talents in an era of several young emerging NHL stars. In the past five seasons, just one of the draft picks, Cody Hodgson, became a regular in the NHL league. The same goes for Jordan Schroeder and Zack Kassian, who are not used in the playoffs and are yet to prove their abilities to become Canucks regulars. The Canucks need to make sure that more of their&nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="color: #000000;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Arial;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: medium;"&gt;draft picks&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="color: #000000;"&gt;&nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;are figured regularly on the roster, rather than making them warm the benches.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;A lot of players have stayed for a long a time together and need to be shuffled, especially when there is no dearth of choices available out there. Making these necessary changes would surely help in getting the Canucks through the playoffs next year.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;h3&gt;Author information&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;div class="ts-fab-wrapper" style="overflow:hidden"&gt;&lt;div class="ts-fab-photo" style="float:left;width:64px"&gt;&lt;img alt='Bruce Hollingdrake' src='<a href='http://0.gravatar.com/avatar/8f7583435cc463fd4f5b9fdd718971ea?s=64&amp;d=http%3A%2F%2F0.gravatar.com%2Favatar%2Fad516503a11cd5ca435acc9bb6523536%3Fs%3D64&amp;r=PG' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://0.gravatar.com/avatar/8f7583435cc463fd4f5b9fdd718971ea?s=64&amp;d=http%3A%2F%2F0.gravatar.com%2Favatar%2Fad516503a11cd5ca435acc9bb6523536%3Fs%3D64&amp;r=PG</a>' class='avatar avatar-64 photo' height='64' width='64' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;!-- /.ts-fab-photo --&gt;&lt;div class="ts-fab-text" style="margin-left:74px"&gt;&lt;div class="ts-fab-header"&gt;&lt;div style="font-size: 1.25em;margin-bottom:0"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;a href="<a href='http://thehockeywriters.com' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://thehockeywriters.com</a>"&gt;Bruce Hollingdrake&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="ts-fab-description" style="margin-bottom:0.5em"&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;span&gt;Founder/Editor-in-Chief&lt;/span&gt; at &lt;span&gt;The Hockey Writers&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;!-- /.ts-fab-header --&gt;&lt;div class="ts-fab-content" style="margin-bottom:0.5em"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="ts-fab-footer"&gt;&lt;a style="margin-right:1.25em" href="<a href='http://twitter.com/TheHockeyWriter' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://twitter.com/TheHockeyWriter</a>"&gt;Twitter&lt;/a&gt;&lt;a style="margin-right:1.25em" href="<a href='http://www.facebook.com/hollingdrake' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://www.facebook.com/hollingdrake</a>"&gt;Facebook&lt;/a&gt;&lt;a style="margin-right:1.25em" href="<a href='http://plus.google.com/101928155575749445959' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://plus.google.com/101928155575749445959</a>"&gt;Google+&lt;/a&gt;&lt;a style="margin-right:1.25em" href="<a href='http://www.linkedin.com/in/brucehollingdrake' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://www.linkedin.com/in/brucehollingdrake</a>"&gt;LinkedIn&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;!-- /.ts-fab-footer --&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;!-- /.ts-fab-text --&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;!-- /.ts-fab-wrapper --&gt;&lt;p&gt;This article was originally published at: &lt;a href="<a href='http://thehockeywriters.com' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://thehockeywriters.com</a>"&gt;The Hockey Writers&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;<br /><br /><a href='http://thehockeywriters.com/where-do-the-canucks-go-now/' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Read more from The Hockey Writers</a>]]></description>

<title>Florida Panthers 2013 Season: Bright Spots to Build On</title>
		<link>http://thenhlarena.com/topic/324787-florida-panthers-2013-season-bright-spots-to-build-on/</link>
<description><![CDATA[&lt;div id="attachment_70333" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 585px"&gt;&lt;a href="<a href='http://d1l8737wcwfl1q.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/USATSI_7232721_154511000_lowres.jpg' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://d1l8737wcwfl1q.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/USATSI_7232721_154511000_lowres.jpg</a>"&gt;&lt;img class="size-large wp-image-70333" alt="Jacob Markstrom" src="<a href='http://d1l8737wcwfl1q.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/USATSI_7232721_154511000_lowres-575x350.jpg' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://d1l8737wcwfl1q.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/USATSI_7232721_154511000_lowres-575x350.jpg</a>" width="575" height="350" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;p class="wp-caption-text"&gt;The puck may slipped past Jacob Markstrom here, but the goaltender is hungry for success. (Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports)&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Ultimately, the past season was a rather lackluster one for the Florida Panthers, but I don’t believe I would call it a failure just yet.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Looking back, there’s something positive that can be taken from this season to satisfy all of the different groups of optimists/pessimists/pundits/loyal fans/etc. For instance, there’s the #2 overall draft spot – hardly a given to “save” this team, but there are more than a few young stars who would instantly help the Panthers’ lineup. There’s the crutch of the 2013 NHL campaign being a lockout-shortened year – i.e. that it doesn’t really count. One could also look at the solid level of play of a number of young up-and-coming players and be satisfied with that alone.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;So, let’s really break it down. Let’s see what the Panthers organization can take into the future and build on to return to the playoffs, and to the good graces of its fan base.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;At the top of the list, is undoubtedly the exceptional play of rookie Jonathan Huberdeau. A nominee for the Calder Trophy, Hubie proved his worth to the team by finishing second in scoring on the club with 31 points, which prorated to an 82-game season, is a very commendable 53-point rookie campaign.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Regardless of a team’s success over the course of a given season, it is always a positive notion when rookies perform at or beyond a team’s expectations. Simply having faith in the scouting capabilities is huge – especially with such a high (and important) position in this year’s draft – but also having the stability of at least one young player to build upon is a massive weight off the organization’s shoulders.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;div id="attachment_41014" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 310px"&gt;&lt;a href="<a href='http://d1l8737wcwfl1q.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Huberdeau_AB76931.jpg' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://d1l8737wcwfl1q.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Huberdeau_AB76931.jpg</a>"&gt;&lt;img class="size-medium wp-image-41014" alt="Jonathan Huberdeau, a Florida Panthers prospect, can be followed on Twitter @JonnyHuby11." src="<a href='http://cdn.thehockeywriters.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Huberdeau_AB76931-300x240.jpg' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://cdn.thehockeywriters.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Huberdeau_AB76931-300x240.jpg</a>" width="300" height="240" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;p class="wp-caption-text"&gt;Jonathan Huberdeau, a Florida Panthers prospect, can be followed on Twitter @JonnyHuby11.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Whether Huberdeau will win the Calder for rookie of the year remains to be seen, but he is not the only shining light on the team’s roster. Moving from the forward position into the crease, 23 year old goaltender Jakob Markstrom can certainly be seen as a piece to the Panthers’ puzzle of future success.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;It’s difficult to display the stats of the three-headed goaltending situation in Florida, but what’s important to note is how the young Swede Markstrom emerged as the starter over proven veteran goalies Jose Theodore and Scott Clemmenson. No one is expecting Markstrom to emulate the play of his fellow countryman Henrik Lundqvist just yet, but he’s gaining experience, and that’s key. Sometimes showing the will to win is enough momentum to pull out a W when a team is firing on all cylinders.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Moving away from the youth for a moment, there are also plenty of veterans on this team making a difference on a nightly basis. Tomas Fleischmann, the Panthers’ leading scorer this season, as well as top defender Brian Campbell did their part in giving the Panthers a chance in each game.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;In short, there is a solid core of players on this club that can be built around – sure it sucks to fall from the division leaders a year ago to last in the conference, but this team can be picked up and made into a playoff caliber team with just a few small tweaks.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Here are some ideas.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;First and foremost is defense. The Panthers were dead last in the NHL in goals against this year – they&nbsp;&lt;em&gt;need&lt;/em&gt;&nbsp;some defense. Helping to prevent all of the pressure in front of their own goal will allow the young scorers to flourish and produce more on offense – to help the (once again) league-worst goals per game average.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Second, bring in some help on the penalty kill. Surprisingly enough, the Panthers were incredible on one end of the special teams’ spectrum finishing 6th in the league on the power play. While killing penalties, though, Florida fell to (once again) dead last. There are plenty of players out there who grind out the forecheck and know how to eat the clock while killing a penalty. PIck up one or two and this is a different team.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Thirdly, attack free agency with a serious ferocity. This team isn’t rebuilding, it’s mending fences. The Panthers have the 19th payroll in the NHL and can do well to spend some cash on a solid number of helpful players. There’s no need to try and ink a superstar for a massive contract – it’s all about filling in the gaps.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;What it all comes down to is looking on the bright side of things when reflecting on this past season. Sure it wasn’t all that spectacular, but there are plenty of ways that the Panthers can improve right now, and head into next year with the ability to win games. Besides, the league will be returning to a full 82-game slate and that will give every team a whole different season to work with.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;If the Panthers’ brass realizes that this is a winning club after applying a few layers of elbow grease, the Panthers can and will be the Southwest Division champs once again in 2014.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;h3&gt;Author information&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;div class="ts-fab-wrapper" style="overflow:hidden"&gt;&lt;div class="ts-fab-photo" style="float:left;width:64px"&gt;&lt;img alt='Adam Davis' src='<a href='http://1.gravatar.com/avatar/d31812bdd33a9e0c9c1199e32a48b586?s=64&amp;d=http%3A%2F%2F1.gravatar.com%2Favatar%2Fad516503a11cd5ca435acc9bb6523536%3Fs%3D64&amp;r=PG' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://1.gravatar.com/avatar/d31812bdd33a9e0c9c1199e32a48b586?s=64&amp;d=http%3A%2F%2F1.gravatar.com%2Favatar%2Fad516503a11cd5ca435acc9bb6523536%3Fs%3D64&amp;r=PG</a>' class='avatar avatar-64 photo' height='64' width='64' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;!-- /.ts-fab-photo --&gt;&lt;div class="ts-fab-text" style="margin-left:74px"&gt;&lt;div class="ts-fab-header"&gt;&lt;div style="font-size: 1.25em;margin-bottom:0"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Adam Davis&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;!-- /.ts-fab-header --&gt;&lt;div class="ts-fab-content" style="margin-bottom:0.5em"&gt;I'm a columnist for the Florida Panthers on The Hockey Writers. <title>Minnesota Wild 2013 Season Player Grades: The Forwards</title>
		<link>http://thenhlarena.com/topic/324788-minnesota-wild-2013-season-player-grades-the-forwards/</link>
<description><![CDATA[&lt;p&gt;The Minnesota Wild will reflect upon the shortened 2013 NHL season positively. The franchise reached the NHL playoffs for the first time since 2008, several young players emerged as promising NHLers and it appears that Chuck Fletcher’s vision for a new core built around Zach Parise and Ryan Suter is starting to take shape. Minnesota’s five game playoff series loss against Chicago left many fans feeling disappointed [see also: &lt;a href="<a href='http://thehockeywriters.com/minnesota-wilds-new-core-struggle-in-first-playoff-series/' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://thehockeywriters.com/minnesota-wilds-new-core-struggle-in-first-playoff-series/</a>"&gt;Minnesota Wild's New Core Struggle In First Playoff Series&lt;/a&gt;]. However, ultimately it should be viewed in the context of the development and learning curve for this franchise. Mike Yeo and this roster took a positive step forward in 2013 and there are signs that the Xcel Energy Center crowd will have a lot more to be excited about in the not too distant future.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;div id="attachment_50156" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 310px"&gt;&lt;a href="<a href='http://cdn.thehockeywriters.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/uspw_6955258.jpg' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://cdn.thehockeywriters.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/uspw_6955258.jpg</a>"&gt;&lt;img class="size-medium wp-image-50156" alt="Parise and Suter minnesota hockey" src="<a href='http://cdn.thehockeywriters.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/uspw_6955258-300x199.jpg' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://cdn.thehockeywriters.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/uspw_6955258-300x199.jpg</a>" width="300" height="199" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;p class="wp-caption-text"&gt;Zach Parise and Ryan Suter both signed with the Wild last summer (Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports)&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;With the Wild’s season now over, there is time to reflect and review the past four months of action. Of course there are still other playoff games going on and you can &lt;a href="<a href='http://topbet.eu/sportsbook/nhl' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://topbet.eu/sportsbook/nhl</a>"&gt;check out Stanley Cup Playoffs Odds at Topbet&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;We are grading every player on their performance in 2013. We start with the forward group, which was arguably one of the deepest in franchise history.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Grades are given in relation to performance expectation as opposed to overall performance; ie Dany Heatley may have scored the fourth most goals, but his play was &lt;a href="<a href='http://capgeek.com/wild' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://capgeek.com/wild</a>"&gt;well below expectations particularly considering his contract.&lt;/a&gt;&nbsp;A ‘C’ grade means that a player has basically performed as was expected of him.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Please feel free to join in the discussion and weigh in with your opinions in the comments section.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;h2&gt;Forwards&lt;/h2&gt;<br>&lt;h3&gt;Mikko Koivu: Grade&nbsp;C&lt;/h3&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;It’s difficult to give Koivu a better grade after he failed to register a point in the playoff series. The 30-year old’s 37 points in 48 games hardly exceeded expectations particularly considering his ice time and the fact that he stayed fit and played alongside Zach Parise all season.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;h3&gt;Zach Parise: Grade B&lt;/h3&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Parise quickly endeared himself to the Wild’s fan base acting as the ‘engine’ for this forward group and pretty much the entire team. His speed and energy were vital in winning puck battles and creating offense all over the ice. It is pretty clear that Parise has the potential to become the core of the identity for this Minnesota roster. A less impressive playoff performance prevents Parise from receiving an A grade.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;h3&gt;Charlie Coyle: Grade B&lt;/h3&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;The preseason rookie focus was squarely placed on Mikael Granlund and how important it was for the balance of the forward group that he step up as the second line center. It didn’t work out. Instead, a different rookie forward, Charlie Coyle, would step up and bring balance to the forward group. Coyle played an invaluable role using an exciting offensive skill set, his size and skating ability to be the perfect winger on the Koivu-Parise top line. Coyle’s play on that line was vital in allowing Yeo to balance out his line-up.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;h3&gt;Matt Cullen: Grade A&lt;/h3&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Cullen’s importance to the Wild this season shouldn’t be under-estimated. With Kyle Brodziak struggling to match his production from last season and Granlund struggling to adapt to the NHL, Cullen stepped up and filled the second line center position. 27 points in 42 games represents pretty decent production from the veteran. &lt;a href="<a href='http://www.twincities.com/sports/ci_23185078/minnesota-wild-help-from-matt-cullen-jason-zucker' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://www.twincities.com/sports/ci_23185078/minnesota-wild-help-from-matt-cullen-jason-zucker</a>"&gt;He also played pretty well in the playoff series and was vital in working with many of the team’s youngers players&lt;/a&gt;, especially Jason Zucker.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;div id="attachment_35166" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 310px"&gt;&lt;a href="<a href='http://cdn.thehockeywriters.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/setoguchi.jpg' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://cdn.thehockeywriters.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/setoguchi.jpg</a>"&gt;&lt;img class="size-medium wp-image-35166" alt="Devin Setoguchi Wild" src="<a href='http://d1l8737wcwfl1q.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/setoguchi-300x199.jpg' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://d1l8737wcwfl1q.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/setoguchi-300x199.jpg</a>" width="300" height="199" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;p class="wp-caption-text"&gt;(Brace Hemmelgarn-US PRESSWIRE)&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;<br>&lt;h3&gt;Devin Setoguchi: Grade C&lt;/h3&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Setoguchi gets away with a C mainly because expectations have clearly diminished for the once extremely promising young forward. The 26-year old engages physically and enjoys streaks of goal-scoring, but his &lt;a href="<a href='http://wild.nhl.com/club/player.htm?id=8471682' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://wild.nhl.com/club/player.htm?id=8471682</a>"&gt;overall production has been severely lacking since his 31-goal season playing on Joe Thornton’s line in 2008-09 with San Jose.&lt;/a&gt;&nbsp;It would be nice to see Setoguchi reach his full potential, but there is a growing feeling that he isn’t going to develop into the premier offensive player that he was expected to become at one stage.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;&lt;span class='embed-youtube' style='text-align:center; display: block;'&gt;&lt;iframe class='youtube-player' type='text/html' width='575' height='354' src='<a href='http://www.youtube.com/embed/IRE1Gdbob5s?version=3&rel=1&fs=1&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&wmode=transparent' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://www.youtube.com/embed/IRE1Gdbob5s?version=3&rel=1&fs=1&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&wmode=transparent</a>' frameborder='0'&gt;&lt;/iframe&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;h3&gt;Dany Heatley: Grade D&lt;/h3&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Maybe Heatley deserves similar treatment to Setoguchi in terms of tempering expectations. However, Heatley is making $7.5 million per season while Setoguchi is ‘only’ making $3 million. After looking reasonably bright playing on a line with Parise and Koivu early in the season, he struggled in the line-up shuffle and eventually suffered a season ending injury at the beginning of April. It’s very plausible that Heatley will be bought out this summer.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;h3&gt;Kyle Brodziak: Grade D&lt;/h3&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Brodziak looked nothing like the promising two-way center who scored 22 goals and 44 points in 2011-12. Instead, for most of the year he was anaemic offensively and at times even a little shaky defensively. The 28-year old appeared to find more of a groove again in the season’s later stages, but Yeo will be looking for more at both ends of the ice from his third line center in 2013-14.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;h3&gt;Pierre-Marc Bouchard: Grade D&lt;/h3&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;The difficulty in grading Bouchard based upon expectations is simple. What was really expected in 2013 of a player who hasn’t managed to stay full healthy during an NHL season since&nbsp;2008-09?&nbsp;The 29-year old did manage to stay healthy&nbsp;this season, but he struggled to produce consistent offense and Wild GM Chuck Fletcher now has a tough decision to make regarding Bouchard’s free agent status. This is the player who&nbsp;definitely has the skill and talent to be a top six forward.&nbsp; There are just concerns that&nbsp;he will never fully&nbsp;realize&nbsp;that&nbsp;talent.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;h3&gt;Cal Clutterbuck: Grade D&lt;/h3&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Clutterbuck may never be a premier offensive player, but his output was still lacking in 2013 and his offensive struggles made it significantly harder for Yeo to find a place for him in the line-up. He scored just four goals and 10 points in 42 games. Clutterbuck’s physical ability will keep him in the NHL, but the 25-year old is still struggling to establish a role for himself beyond that heavy hitting.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;&lt;span class='embed-youtube' style='text-align:center; display: block;'&gt;&lt;iframe class='youtube-player' type='text/html' width='575' height='354' src='<a href='http://www.youtube.com/embed/FrJPWvoVaDY?version=3&rel=1&fs=1&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&wmode=transparent' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://www.youtube.com/embed/FrJPWvoVaDY?version=3&rel=1&fs=1&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&wmode=transparent</a>' frameborder='0'&gt;&lt;/iframe&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;h3&gt;Jason Zucker: Grade B&lt;/h3&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Zucker was expected to spend at least one season developing in the AHL before being able to step up at NHL level. He never quite established himself as a permanent member of the line-up this season, but he played 20 regular season games and five postseason games &lt;a href="<a href='http://www.rantsports.com/nhl/2013/05/17/minnesota-wild-rookie-report-card-jason-zucker/' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://www.rantsports.com/nhl/2013/05/17/minnesota-wild-rookie-report-card-jason-zucker/</a>"&gt;showing enough to suggest that he will be in the starting line-up next season.&lt;/a&gt; Zucker is a hard-working, gritty player and he has game breaking speed.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;h3&gt;Torrey Mitchell: Grade B&lt;/h3&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="<a href='http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/2012/7/1/3130144/torrey-mitchell-minnesota-wild-free-agency-news-updates' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/2012/7/1/3130144/torrey-mitchell-minnesota-wild-free-agency-news-updates</a>"&gt;Mitchell was an unheralded free agent signing last summer&lt;/a&gt;, but he has filled an important role for the Wild this season. Minnesota lacked a nagging, gritty presence on the fourth line during the 2011-12 season. Mitchell’s role has been clear all season long and his tally of four goals wasn’t too dissimilar from players expected to contribute more offensively.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;h3&gt;Jason Pominville:&nbsp;Grade Incomplete&lt;/h3&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Pominville showed that he can be the winger that anchors a second scoring line before he got injured at the end of the regular season. &lt;a href="<a href='http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/jason-pominville-wild-club-continues-add-star-power-191339965--nhl.html' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/jason-pominville-wild-club-continues-add-star-power-191339965--nhl.html</a>"&gt;Wild GM Chuck Fletcher has invested a lot into Pominville.&lt;/a&gt; His performance will be critical in 2013-14.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;div id="attachment_74447" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 310px"&gt;&lt;a href="<a href='http://cdn.thehockeywriters.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/hawks-wild.jpg' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://cdn.thehockeywriters.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/hawks-wild.jpg</a>"&gt;&lt;img class="size-medium wp-image-74447" alt="(Rob Grabowski-USA TODAY Sports)" src="<a href='http://cdn.thehockeywriters.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/hawks-wild-300x199.jpg' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://cdn.thehockeywriters.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/hawks-wild-300x199.jpg</a>" width="300" height="199" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;p class="wp-caption-text"&gt;(Rob Grabowski-USA TODAY Sports)&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;<br>&lt;h3&gt;Mike Rupp: Grade D&lt;/h3&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Rupp brought leadership to the roster and a little bit of grit. He has never been a fast skater, but he looked just a pace behind the game throughout much of his time in Minnesota. It will be interesting to see how he performs in training camp assuming the Wild retain him.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;h3&gt;Zenon Konopka: Grade C&lt;/h3&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Konopka provided pretty much what was expected of him. He won more than 60% of his face-offs, antagonized opponents and was up their in terms of total fights.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;h3&gt;Mikael Granlund: Grade C&lt;/h3&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Always save the most contentious for last. Granlund did not under-achieve this season. The only way that his performance can be described as underachievement is if the expectation was that a 20-year old rookie would seize a second line center spot on an NHL roster. Granlund showed that he has plenty of offensive potential and also showed that he still needs to round out his game to play at the top level. There’s nothing unexpected about that in the development of a young player.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;The Hockey Writers Minnesota Wild staff are reviewing the team’s season with player breakdowns this week. <title>St. Louis Blues Offseason Needs</title>

Considering the salary cap is expected to be lower than last year’s $70.2 million, resigning key players while also improving the overall core of the team will be a more daunting task than usual.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="<a href='http://thehockeywriters.com/st-louis-blues-off-season-plans-who-to-re-sign/' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://thehockeywriters.com/st-louis-blues-off-season-plans-who-to-re-sign/</a>" target="_blank"&gt;Jeff Ponder outlines who should stay and who should go right here.&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;After an extensive review of this year’s first round exit, some key roster spots, and thus, key roles need to be revolutionized; dramatic changes are in order.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;h1&gt;&lt;span style="text-decoration: underline;"&gt;#1 Playmaking Center&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/h1&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;While the Blues lack a pure sniper/point producer from the wing, their depth and overall balance on their wings from line 1 to line 4 is a nice advantage heading into this year’s offseason.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Youngsters like Jaden Schwartz, Vladamir Tarasenko, and quite possibly Ty Rattie somewhere down the line will provide this Blues team with above-average talent on the wings for years to come (provided they stay with the team, and all indications are pointing in that direction).&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="<a href='http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/showthread.php?t=1429265' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/showthread.php?t=1429265</a>" target="_blank"&gt;However, what the Blues are currently lacking is a top-line center; it isn’t David Backes.&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Amongst all the centers in the NHL for this past season, Backes finished 42&lt;sup&gt;nd&lt;/sup&gt; in total points, 84&lt;sup&gt;th&lt;/sup&gt; in goals scored, and 25&lt;sup&gt;th&lt;/sup&gt; in assists.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Even after considering the fact that this year was a shortened season, stats like these would be acceptable and expected of a high-end #2 center.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;div id="attachment_32509" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 525px"&gt;&lt;a href="<a href='http://cdn.thehockeywriters.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Backes_Weenie-Hat.jpg' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://cdn.thehockeywriters.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Backes_Weenie-Hat.jpg</a>"&gt;&lt;img class="size-large wp-image-32509 " alt="Backes career high in a season: 10'-11' where he potted 31G and added 31A (Jeff Ponder / Icon SMI)" src="<a href='http://cdn.thehockeywriters.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Backes_Weenie-Hat-515x386.jpg' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://cdn.thehockeywriters.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Backes_Weenie-Hat-515x386.jpg</a>" width="515" height="386" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;p class="wp-caption-text"&gt;Backes’ career high in a season: 10′-11′ where he potted 31G and added 31A. (Jeff Ponder / Icon SMI)&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Furthermore, his career stats also indicate that Backes is no more than a high end #2/low-end #1 center: he has never been higher than 18&lt;sup&gt;th&lt;/sup&gt; in total points amongst centers in his entire career.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="<a href='http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/players/3861/career;_ylt=AnUBWSzvMgQAhvTOlFHgFiBivLYF' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/players/3861/career;_ylt=AnUBWSzvMgQAhvTOlFHgFiBivLYF</a>" target="_blank"&gt;In his 6 seasons with the Blues&lt;/a&gt;, Backes has surpassed the 60-point mark once and the 50-point mark twice. Looking at his goals and assists per year, we see he’s very well rounded as his goals and assist are typically on par with one another.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;&nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;&nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;That’s not what this Blues team needs from their #1 center though. Their top pairing should be set for next year as long as the Blues resign their #1 offseason priority, Alex Pietrangelo. Petro and Bouwmeester should be the automatic #1 defense pair for the Blues heading into next season, especially considering both would be #1 defensemen on most teams.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="<a href='http://forecaster.thehockeynews.com/hockeynews/hockey/player.php?6219' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://forecaster.thehockeynews.com/hockeynews/hockey/player.php?6219</a>" target="_blank"&gt;Shattenkirks offensive abilities are well established&lt;/a&gt;. However, his small frame puts him at a disadvantage when he’s on the ice against large forwards.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;He needs a Douglas Murray type defensemen to be his partner. That would give the Blues an insane 1&lt;sup&gt;st&lt;/sup&gt; pairing in Petro-Bouwmeester, a strong 2&lt;sup&gt;nd&lt;/sup&gt; pairing consisting of a puck moving defenseman and a stay at home defenseman, and then an above average 3&lt;sup&gt;rd&lt;/sup&gt; pairing with &lt;a href="<a href='http://thehockeywriters.com/barret-jackman-3-reasons-your-team-wants-him/' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://thehockeywriters.com/barret-jackman-3-reasons-your-team-wants-him/</a>" target="_blank"&gt;the great Barrett Jackman&lt;/a&gt; (can you tell he’s a favorite of mine?) plus whomever the Blues choose to stick with him.&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;h2&gt;Candidates:&lt;/h2&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;Speaking of Douglas Murray, his &lt;a href="<a href='http://thehockeywriters.com/douglas-murray-defensive-system/' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://thehockeywriters.com/douglas-murray-defensive-system/</a>" target="_blank"&gt;transition from the Sharks to the Penguins&lt;/a&gt;&nbsp;has proven his versatility; &lt;a href="<a href='http://forecaster.thehockeynews.com/hockeynews/hockey/player.php?2854' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://forecaster.thehockeynews.com/hockeynews/hockey/player.php?2854</a>" target="_blank"&gt;his shutdown ability&lt;/a&gt; was already fairly known:&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;p&gt;&lt;span class='embed-youtube' style='text-align:center; display: block;'&gt;&lt;iframe class='youtube-player' type='text/html' width='575' height='354' src='<a href='http://www.youtube.com/embed/Othpy-2Dq70?version=3&rel=1&fs=1&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&wmode=transparent' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://www.youtube.com/embed/Othpy-2Dq70?version=3&rel=1&fs=1&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&wmode=transparent</a>' frameborder='0'&gt;&lt;/iframe&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;<br>&lt;div id="attachment_34424" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 227px"&gt;&lt;a href="<a href='http://cdn.thehockeywriters.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Ian-Cole.jpg' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://cdn.thehockeywriters.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Ian-Cole.jpg</a>"&gt;&lt;img class="size-medium wp-image-34424 " alt="Ian Cole Blues" src="<a href='http://cdn.thehockeywriters.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Ian-Cole-217x300.jpg' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>http://cdn.thehockeywriters.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Ian-Cole-217x300.jpg</a>" width="217" height="300" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;p class="wp-caption-text"&gt;According to The Hockey News, Cole is “a talented shutdown defenseman with upside”. <description><![CDATA[<p></p><blockquote class="ipsBlockquote"><p>It didn't take long for Sabres forward Steve Ott to become a fan favorite in Buffalo. His physical and sometimes outrageous style provided fans with a dose of the edge and attitude they'd been missing over the past few seasons.<br><br>While the former Stars forward added toughness and leadership to a Sabres team that was short on both, a statistical analysis of his 2013 season suggests a change in usage could make him more effective in 2013-14.<br><br>The Sabres' biggest struggle this season was puck possession. <description><![CDATA[<p></p><blockquote class="ipsBlockquote"><p>In the aftermath of the season many Jets fans and media alike have mentioned the progress of the Toronto Maple Leafs as something the Winnipeg Jets can strive towards. The premise is loose and lazy to begin with, but I believe the idea is that the Jets will take a similar step forward when they start graduating their young talent. Mark Scheifele can be Winnipeg’s Nazem Kadri. Jacob Trouba can be the Jets' Jake Gardiner and so on. Something silly like that anyways. It is a fun storyline I suppose, but it doesn’t really reflect the reality of the situation.<br><br>Yes, the Winnipeg Jets and Toronto Maple Leafs are both young teams. Yes, the Jets are set to start graduating some of their young talent. Yes, the Jets may be poised for a step forward, but that is where the similarities end. These two teams are built very differently and play very different games. The biggest flaw in this storyline is the fact that the Maple Leafs' "big steps" were largely built around two things that the team has zero control over.</p></blockquote><br><br><a href='http://www.arcticicehockey.com/2013/5/15/4334334/toronto-maple-leafs-model-will-not-work-for-winnipeg-jets-stats' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>More right here</a>]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[<p></p><blockquote class="ipsBlockquote"><p>Despite lacking a lot of depth and talent, the Carolina Hurricanes organization has top-end prospects in the pipeline, including the offensively talented defenseman Ryan Murphy, and a potential rising offensive star in Victor Rask. There are also several good depth defensemen who, in the near future, could solidify the Carolina blue line.<br><br><strong class='bbc'>1. (1) Ryan Murphy, D, 8.0C<br>Drafted 1st round, 12th overall, 2011</strong><br><br>Over the last eight months, Ryan Murphy played hockey for four different teams in two hemispheres at four levels of competition. Murphy captained the Kitchener Rangers in the OHL, and collected 49 points through 54 regular season games. He helped lead the Rangers to the Western Conference Semi-Finals, where they fell in five games to the eventual Western Conference champion London Knights. Murphy also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in Ufa, Russia, but his trip there also ended in disappointment after Canada lost to the US in the semi-finals and failed to win a medal. In late February, Murphy got his first chance to play in the NHL, and saw four games of scoreless action before his emergency call up ended. After his OHL season, he joined the Charlotte Checkers in the AHL where he scored four points in eight games.<br><br>Murphy is a gifted offensive defenseman, with great vision and the passing ability to get the puck to open players. The former first-round pick lacks size and still needs extensive development of his defensive skills, but when the puck is on his stick, he makes things happen. Although he seems destined to be a powerplay specialist at the NHL level, if he can acquire the patience and determination to play a solid game in his own end, he could become a valuable top-four defenseman.</p></blockquote><br><br><a href='http://www.hockeysfuture.com/articles/90889/murphy-and-rask-remain-top-prospects-for-carolina-hurricanes/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=murphy-and-rask-remain-top-prospects-for-carolina-hurricanes' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>More...</a>]]></description>

<p><strong><span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="font-family:georgia, serif;">From NHL.com.</span></span></strong></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<blockquote class="ipsBlockquote"><p><strong><span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="font-family:georgia, serif;">Big story:&nbsp;Any hopes the&nbsp;<a href='http://senators.nhl.com/' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Ottawa Senators</a>&nbsp;have of getting back into this Eastern Conference Semifinal series will hinge on their performance in Game 3 against the&nbsp;<a href='http://penguins.nhl.com/' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Pittsburgh Penguins</a>. After dropping the first two games of the series in Pittsburgh, Ottawa will need to take advantage of the series shifting to Scotiabank Place. The last time they dropped the first two games in a series to Pittsburgh, they were swept out of the first round of the 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs.</span></span></strong></p>
<p><strong>&nbsp;</strong></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="font-family:georgia, serif;">Senators forward&nbsp;<a href='http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8469455' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Jason Spezza</a>&nbsp;practiced Saturday without a no-contact jersey and is expected to play. He was limited to five games this season with a back injury.</span></span></strong></p>
<p><strong>&nbsp;</strong></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="font-family:georgia, serif;">Team Scope:</span></span></strong></p>
<p><strong>&nbsp;</strong></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="font-family:georgia, serif;">Pittsburgh:&nbsp; It didn't take long for center&nbsp;<a href='http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8471675' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Sidney Crosby</a>&nbsp;to make his mark on Game 2 of the series. The Penguins captain walked past Senators defenseman&nbsp;<a href='http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8474578' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Erik Karlsson</a>&nbsp;and beat goalie&nbsp;<a href='http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8467950' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Craig Anderson</a>&nbsp;to open the scoring.&nbsp;<a href='http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8474068' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Kyle Turris</a>&nbsp;would reply for Ottawa 10 minutes later, but Crosby would score twice more, completing his hat trick on the power play 1:15 into the second period. The goal would end the night for Anderson, who was pulled and replaced by&nbsp;<a href='http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8475215' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Robin Lehner</a>.</span></span></strong></p>
<p><strong>&nbsp;</strong></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="font-family:georgia, serif;">Ottawa would continue to battle back throughout the game, but&nbsp;<a href='http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8466160' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Brenden Morrow</a>'s second-period deflection would prove to be the game-winner in a 4-3 victory. Pittsburgh never trailed in the matchup and outshot the Senators 42-22. But the Penguins needed some big stops from goaltender&nbsp;<a href='http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8460712' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Tomas Vokoun</a>&nbsp;to secure the win.</span></span></strong></p>
<p><strong>&nbsp;</strong></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="font-family:georgia, serif;">"Right from the drop of the puck we came out and had some great chances, some good pressure," Penguins forward&nbsp;<a href='http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8462042' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Jarome Iginla</a>&nbsp;said. "I thought not just this game, but our first two games were good overall games."</span></span></strong></p>
<p><strong>&nbsp;</strong></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="font-family:georgia, serif;">Senators:&nbsp; The final score may have been close in Game 2, but the Penguins have created some serious problems for the Senators through two games. For one thing, Ottawa has not led at any point in the series. It's also failed to contain Pittsburgh's star players or a dominating Penguins power play which has scored three times in 10 opportunities.</span></span></strong></p>
<p><strong>&nbsp;</strong></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="font-family:georgia, serif;">Perhaps most worrisome for Ottawa is the play of Anderson. After appearing unbeatable in the opening round against the Montreal Canadiens, he has allowed seven goals on 51 shots in two games for a save percentage of .863. His early exit Friday marked the only time all season he's been removed for performance reasons. If they want to get back into the series, the Senators will need to improve in numerous areas, starting from their net on out.</span></span></strong></p>
<p><strong>&nbsp;</strong></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="font-family:georgia, serif;">They'll surely benefit from the return of Spezza. The all-star confirmed Saturday he would be back for Game 3.</span></span></strong></p>
<p><strong>&nbsp;</strong></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="font-family:georgia, serif;">"The obvious challenge is the speed of the game and hopping right into the playoffs isn't easy," Spezza said. "I've put in the work. It's been a long time coming and I hope the excitement can kind of help me get through to get things back as quick as possible."</span></span></strong></p>
<p><strong>&nbsp;</strong></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="font-family:georgia, serif;">Who's hot:&nbsp;Penguins defenseman&nbsp;<a href='http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8471724' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Kris Letang</a>&nbsp;has eight points in his past six games. Center&nbsp;<a href='http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8471215' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Evgeni Malkin</a>&nbsp;is tied for the playoff lead with 14 points. Crosby is right behind him with 12 points. … Ottawa's&nbsp;<a href='http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8476419' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Jean-Gabriel Pageau</a>&nbsp;has six points in his past five games. Turris has four goals in his past five games.&nbsp;<a href='http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8473588' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Erik Condra</a>&nbsp;has five points in his current three-game point streak.</span></span></strong></p>
<p><strong>&nbsp;</strong></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="font-family:georgia, serif;">Injury report:&nbsp;The Penguins are fielding a healthy lineup. … Senators forward&nbsp;<a href='http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8474884' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='external'>Mike Hoffman</a>&nbsp;(upper body) is out. <title>Depressed Kane only to take home 3 or 4 girls from the bar tonight</title>

<blockquote class="ipsBlockquote"><p>Saddened by his team’s flat performance in Saturday’s 4-1 playoff<br>
loss to the Red Wings, Patrick Kane claimed to be “super depressed” and<br>
predicted he’d probably only take home three or four girls from the bar<br>
later this evening.</p>
<br><p>“That was such a tough loss,” said Kane in post-game interview. “But<br>
you know, I did score our only goal, so I feel like I should be rewarded<br>
for that.”</p>
<br><p>Kane said he’d probably make the rounds in River North, or maybe head<br>
up to Wrigleyville, hoping to score a few drunk female Mets fans.</p>
<br><p>“There’s something about New York girls that really gets to me,” said<br>
Kane. “Plus, they probably don’t care about how bad we stunk up the<br>
joint against Detroit this afternoon, so they might be even easier than<br>
Chicago girls today.”</p></blockquote>

<blockquote class="ipsBlockquote"><p>Despite winning the Stanley just three seasons ago, Blackhawks star<br>
forward Patrick Kane seems to have forgotten much of the protocol<br>
regarding the historic trophy as he has been asking team and league<br>
officials, “So, does the Cup come pre-filled with champagne, or what?”</p>
<br><p>Coach Joel Quenneville set the notorious partyer aside after practice.</p>
<br><p>“We <em>just</em> won the Stanley Cup a few years ago. You know that,<br>
right?” Quenneville asked. “You drank champagne from it but you had to<br>
pour it in yourself. How do you not remember this?”</p>
<br><p>After a few beats, Kane smiled.</p>
<br><p>“Oh yeah, I remember,” he said, before contemplating additional types of alcohol he could drink from the 35-pound cup.</p>
<br><p>When league officials informed him he would not be allowed to make<br>
“jungle juice” or “flaming Dr. Peppers” in the cup, Kane asked, “So do<br>
we have to stick with champagne and beer? I mean, Four Loko is okay,<br>
right?”</p>
<br><p>Kane was later seen walking into a Binny’s attempting to return a bottle of Everclear.</p></blockquote>

<title>Stalberg likely to play in game 3</title>

<blockquote class="ipsBlockquote"><p>Viktor Stalberg's absence from the Chicago Blackhawks lineup "likely" ends after two games.</p>
<br><p>The Hawks need better pace in Game 3 against the Red Wings on Monday,<br>
so they appear to be reinserting Stalberg, a player with superior speed<br>
and lingering hunger from spending the first two games of the series as<br>
an observer.</p>
<br><p>Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said Stalberg is "likely playing" at Joe<br>
Louis Arena on Monday, which is Stanley Cup playoff coach-speak for a<br>
return to active duty.</p></blockquote>
