A quick look at the San Antonio Rampage roster

With the return of the NHL, comes the return of the AHL. For the second time in both teams' history, the Panthers will be sending their prospects to San Antonio. The Rampage have made the playoffs twice, and have yet to win a playoff series, but hopefully that will all change this season. Before the roster was stripped of its talent, the Rochester Americans, the Florida's previous AHL affiliate, was just six points out of the postseason at the trade deadline. But enough with the dreadful season that was last year, it's time to look forward toward the future.

Florida Panthers Prospect Roundup: October 14, 2011

San Antonio Rampage (AHL)
(1-0-0) 2 Points, West Division
Goals for 3, Goals Against 2

The Rampage opened their 10th season on Saturday against the Chicago Wolves, newly-minted AHL affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks. A record crowd of 9,062 did not leave disappointed, as San Antonio wasted no time scoring their first goal of the year just 27 seconds into the game (a club best), crediting Bracken Kearns with the marker. The Wolves would tie it up before the end of the first period, though potentially far worse was on the horizon as Rampage starter Manny Legace - a Stanley Cup winner and veteran of eleven NHL seasons - did not return to the game after suffering a re-aggravated lower body injury thanks to one Mike Duco; enter Florida prospect Brian Foster in relief. Jonathan Hazen scored his first professional point to knot it up in the second frame. After a scoreless third period and overtime, the clubs went to a shootout where A.J. Jenks and Hazen scored while Foster stopped all four Wolves shooters to seal the victory.

Rampage Report - Rampage 4, Texas 3

Scott Timmons scored his second goal of the game with 1:48 left in regulation, tipping the puck over the shoulder of Stars' goaltender Richard Bachman for the Rampage's first win in regulation this season.

The Rampage led 3-1 after two periods, only to have the Stars rally to tie the game with two goals in the first five minutes of the third.

After the Stars grabbed a 1-0 lead on their league-leading power play at 10:45 in the first, the Rampage struck back just 18 seconds later.

Quick trip to NHL inspires Rampage's Kearns

At age 30, after six seasons and 429 games in the minor leagues, Rampage center Bracken Kearns was beginning to think a call-up to the NHL might never come.

When it finally did, he was caught off-guard. But that didn’t mean he wasn’t ready. Or wasn’t deserving.

On a recent afternoon, with the team’s game in Austin against the Texas Stars only hours away, Kearns was fixing a light lunch of noodle soup, pasta and chicken in his San Antonio apartment.

Rampage Roster Revisions Bringing Relief?

It’s been a tough two weeks for the San Antonio Rampage as they try and snap a four-game HOME losing streak this weekend.

Toronto is in Saturday night and I-35 rivals, the Texas Stars, come calling Sunday afternoon.

Goaltender Tyler Plante and forwards AJ Jenks and Jonathan Hazen were shipped out to Cincinnati of the ECHL, while the parent Florida Panthers dispatched goaltender Scott Clemmensen to San Antonio for a reconditioning assignment. Earlier this week, forward Tim Kennedy was returned to San Antonio from the Panthers.

He shoots, scores vs. childhood cancer

At 6 feet 6 and 251 pounds, Rampage defenseman Nolan Yonkman has always been an intimidating force on the ice.

Throughout his career, Yonkman has been known for his crunching hits on the opposition — for being a tough guy.

Then he met 9-year-old Yadira Medrano.

Rampage blanked by Stars, 4-0

The Rampage were held scoreless in a 4-0 loss to West Division rival Texas Stars on Sunday afternoon at the AT&T Center. Stars goalie Richard Bachman stopped all 29 Rampage shots for his second shutout of the season.

The Stars took an early 1-0 lead with a goal by center Travis Morin just one minute after the initial faceoff. Stationed to Rampage goaltender Brian Foster’s left, Morin received a pass through the slot from right wing Raymond Sawada and took a shot that was denied by Foster. Morin then picked up his own rebound and lifted the puck over Foster and into the net for his fourth goal of the season. Rookie forward Matt Fraser tallied his 11th point of the season on the play with a secondary assist.

New goalie possible savior for Rampage

Jacob Markstrom stepped off the plane from Florida on Monday with little fanfare. Still, this didn't signal the arrival of just another player.

For the Rampage, the 21-year-old Swedish goaltender is their knight on a white horse, riding in to save the day.

That's unofficial, of course. People such as Rampage coach Chuck Weber say that Markstrom is not the only answer to what ails his team.

Getting Unsettlingly Familiar

Not quite ready to officially declare the return of a 17-game winless streak.

But the Ides of November are upon us.

You may recall those depressing old days of yesteryear — namely November 2008, when the Rampage ran the table in a negative way, going 0-16-1 during that fateful and fretful month that cost San Antonio head coach, Greg Ireland, his job and the team any chance of making the playoffs.

Rampage rally to snap three-game losing streak

The Rampage snapped a three-game losing skid with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory against the Texas Stars on Sunday before 5,735 fans at the AT&T Center.

The Stars' Francis Wathier opened the scoring by tipping in a blueline blast by defenseman Jordie Benn on the power play at 16:49 of the first period.

The Rampage, who won for only the second time in their last nine games, have been outscored 11-3 in the first period over their last seven contests. But second-period markers from Tim Kennedy and Mark Cullen gave them their first lead since Nov. 5, a stretch of four games.

Rampage's record displeases Panthers

The Rampage haven't even played a quarter of their AHL schedule, yet there are rumblings within the parent Florida Panthers' organization that a shakeup could be looming unless the team turns things around.

And quickly.

“It's unacceptable,” general manager Mike Santos said of the club's 5-9 record, worst in the 30-team league. “I've had a meeting with the players and several with the coaches. We're here to develop players, but winning is a part of development. I don't want to develop losers.”

Milwaukee 3, Rampage 1

The Rampage managed only 13 shots as the Admirals ended San Antonio's modest two-game winning streak Sunday at the Bradley Center.

Bracken Kearns scored the only Rampage goal against his former mates as he picked up a loose puck at 14:30 of the second period for his team-leading sixth goal, only the Rampage's seventh shot on net.

The Rampage have mustered only 22 shots on goal in their last five periods. They launched only three shots in the third period.

Rampage bring back goalie

Rampage general manager Mike Santos announced the signing of goaltender Dov Grumet-Morris to an AHL contract.

It’s the second stint in San Antonio for Grumet-Morris. The 29-year-old Evanston, Ill., native played one game for the Rampage during the 2005-06 season, recording 25 saves. He has appeared in 49 career AHL games, most recently for Connecticut in 2010-11.

He played one Rampage game against a team that doesn’t exist anymore.

He gave up seven goals on Oct. 16, 2005.

His Rampage goals against average was 7.04, making 25 saves in the game against the Iowa Chops.
