Home ice regains its appeal for Rampage

Home-ice advantage? Not when the Rampage and Abbotsford Heat get together.

In four games between the teams this season, the visiting team had won every time. In a rout.

Until Monday, when Mark Cullen's third-period goal lifted the Rampage to a 2-1 victory over the Heat in an MLK Day matinee in front of 4,180 fans at the AT&T Center.

Rampage midseason report card

A year ago, the Rampage soared into the halfway point of the season at 25-15-1-0, their best start in franchise history. But they faltered the second half and failed to make the playoffs.

This season, after changing NHL affiliates from Phoenix to Florida, the Rampage have struggled over the first half at 19-18-2-0. So will their fortunes be reversed in the second half? Are the playoffs in their future?

Rampage 4, Houston 3 (SO)

Newcomer Jon Matsumoto scored twice in regulation and once in the shootout to lead the Rampage to their season-high fifth win in a row.

Matsumoto got help from Michal Repik, who scored the game-winner with a backhander over a sprawled Houston goalie Matt Hackett in the first sudden-death round of the shootout.

Greg Rallo was awarded a shootout goal after his shot went through the net, bumping Hackett's water bottle in the process. After the officials discussed the situation, referee Ian Croft signaled the goal.

Rampage post seventh straight win

Goaltender Dov Grumet-Morris stopped 36 shots and a balanced scoring attack led the Rampage to their franchise-record-tying seventh straight win, 5-2 over the Houston Aeros in front of 6,899 fans at the AT&T Center on Saturday night.

Grumet-Morris has been the goaltender for each of the victories, giving him a franchise record for consecutive wins for a netminder, eclipsing the standard set twice by Josh Tordjman. He kicked out 18 first-period shots.

Five different Rampage players scored goals.

Pretty in Pink, Rampage expect sell-out crowd this Friday

Last year, the San Antonio Rampage held an event for the first time that met unprecedented success. Not only did a multitude of fans come out to support the Rampage, but they also came out in droves to stand behind an even larger cause, breast cancer awareness.

The Rampage’s inaugural Pink in the Rink Night last January attracted a franchise record 14,339 fans to the AT&T Center and raised $25,000 for the San Antonio Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. Now, the team is ready to hold the event a second time, with this year’s Pink in the Rink Night set to be played on Friday, February 3rd, when the Rampage host the Lake Erie Monsters.

The ice will be dyed pink once again and the team will don pink sweaters to promote the cause. As was the case following last season’s contest, the Rampage will auction off the players’ jerseys after the game and proceeds will benefit Komen San Antonio.

Rampage win in Hamilton for first time

The Rampage rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to score four unanswered goals en route to the franchise's first road victory over the Hamilton Bulldogs on Wednesday at Copps Coliseum.

Hamilton's Ryan White started the scoring with a shot from the sideboard 4:55 into the game.

White posted his second goal of the year slightly more than five minutes later after taking a centering pass to make it 2-0.

Rampage 4, Rockford 1

Four of six former Rochester Americans returned to upstate New York to haunt their former team as the Rampage (27-20-2-0) moved to 3-0 on the rodeo trip Saturday.

Michael Repik scored two second-period goals, and Bill Thomas added his fourth goal of the trip in the middle session, while Eric Selleck and Mark Cullen had assists. All four forwards skated in Rochester last season when the Florida Panthers farmhands filled out the Americans' roster.

The Rampage, 17-0-2-0 when leading after the second period, have won 10 of their last 12 games and have outscored opponents 41-25 during the run.

Rampage lose in shootout

Rampage defenseman Roman Derlyuk made up for a second-period gaffe by scoring the tying goal with 2:28 left in regulation, but the Stars prevailed in the shootout at the Cedar Park Center.

Stars rookie sensation Matt Frazier scored his 25th goal on a rebound just 1:33 into the third period for a 4-3 Stars edge, but Derlyuk played deep in the zone to tap in a loose puck to force the extra session.

Earlier, the teams traded goals, with Michael Repik, Evan Barlow and Greg Rallo lighting the lamp for the Rampage.

The Rampage continue their road trip with Jacob Markstrom returning, another Panthers prospect has season-ending surgery, while Drew Shore and Nick Bjugstad continue to score. This and more in the Roundup after the jump...

Texas Stars 5, San Antonio Rampage 4

The Rampage ended the first period with a 2-1 lead, with goals from Michal Repik and Evan Barlow. The Stars tied the game in the second, scoring two goals, the Rampage only goal in the period being from former Star Greg Rallo. The Stars took the lead just a minute and a half into the third, with the Rampage tying it 16 minutes later with Roman Derlyuk's first goal of the season. The game went into overtime and a shootout where the Rampage couldn't score a goal and the Stars skated away with the win. Dov Grumet-Morris (who was to signed a one year extension by San Antonio) was in net for the 19th consecutive game, stopping 40 shots.

Texas Stars 4, San Antonio Rampage 2

Jacob Markstrom makes his return, playing his first game since New Year's Eve. After allowing a goal in the first period, the Rampage tied the game just 47 seconds into the second with a goal from Greg Rallo. In the third period, the Rampage took the lead with a powerplay goal from Bill Thomas, snapping an 0-12 drought on the powerplay. The Rampage failed to hold on to lead, allowing three goals. The lost dropped the Rampage to 8th place in the Western Conference. Markstrom made 34 saves off 37 shots.

Dov does the job!

Maybe the rest was a good idea.

Rampage coach Chuck Weber most likely absentmindedly just put the check next to Dov Grumet-Morris’ name as his goaltender choice since Jan. 3. Weber did it 19 straight times and DGM responded, moving up to fourth place among AHL goaltenders, posting a 12-6-0-1 record over that span, including a franchise record seven straight wins.

Couple of reasons the streak didn’t keep going…this was the second straight 3-in-3 weekend for the Rampage and there’s this number-one draft pick of the Florida Panthers sitting on the bench, waiting for Grumet-Morris to crash and burn.

Rampage Report: Milwaukee 3, Rampage 1

The Admirals snapped the Rampage’s three-game winning streak, breaking a 1-1 deadlock in the third period before 14,419 at the Bradley Center.

Milwaukee’s Kyle Wilson intercepted a Rampage clearing pass and fed Brian Flynn for his fourth goal of the season at 8:43 of the third. Chris Mueller added an empty-netter with 41 seconds remaining.

Jon Matsumoto, back from a one-game stint with the Florida Panthers, scored on a one-timer from Bill Thomas and Greg Rallo at 17:32 of the second period during a 5-on-3 power play, the first time this season the Rampage have converted on the two-man advantage.
