This is what I get for gambling when I acquired DP in the LSHL. I was banking that his health and the size of his contract would force the Isles to play him. Now with Montoya getting the starts and DP being injured yet again it looks like I am in for some tough ribbing on the deal which cost me 2 2nd round picks haha.

Poor Rick.
Anyone would be hurt from this though, its not about him being fragile, it more about him being unlucky.
I think IRA summed it up best in one icon: :facepalm1:

Hey, look at it this way- its a minor concussion, and they are just being very cautious about it. He was with the team today, its not like he is all messed up.

I think with Montoya starting and Nabokov a healthy backup there is no need to push DP in any way.

Rick is handling this as he has handled everything else this season, with humor and a good team attitude. From Twitter:

NYIslanders
DP concluded his media availability saying he's remaining positive and looking forward to being ready to play. #isles

NYIslanders
DiPietro says he's disappointed, but keeps it lite adding that he made the save on the play. #isles

I read an article at lunch where DiPietro jokingly (?) stated that he thinks there's someone with a voodoo doll of him somewhere and they keep poking it. I chuckled.

Hey I havent heard a better theory lol.
Sucks that he has to miss some (more) time since he had a good camp, and Im glad he is taking it so well, but honestly- he would just be backing up Monty right now anyway (who has been outstanding). Plus, in a way Id rather Nabokov get some starts over Rick for the time being so that he can show what he's still got (hopefully) and get traded.

Really? a puck hits him on the mask and he gets a concussion? That is the definition of fragile. I heard after the puck hit him, he wanted to fight it...Posted Image

Sorry but an NHL slapshot directly to the head that is hard enough to crack a goalies gear would ring ANYBODY'S bell.
The Isles have had numerous players take slapshots to the head that both concussed them and/or literally cracked their jaws(Jackman, Hillen, MacDonald, etc). But I am perfectly aware of how easy it is to pretend that any other guy would be fine, it makes for far better jokes.

No, his job is to be a GOALIE! He will probably get hit in the head a few times a year. Is it really worth the risk to his health if he gets a concussion when it happens? Jokes aside, he should be very concerned.

What do you want me to tell you? If a bomb of a shot hit ANY goalies head hard enough to crack his mask, theres a good chance the guy could have a concussion- and in todays NHL, teams are not allowed to take chances with concussions (nor should they).

I was talking to a friend of mine before and he said something that I think makes some sense- the Isles are starting Nabokov tonight because, since Rick is hurt, they will not have to healthy scratch him or Montoya. This is a good time to give Nabby starts without even worrying about dissing one of the Isles more long-term goalies.

:fuck:

in all seriousness, though, I'm a lacrosse goalie, and I've taken shots to the head that have left my ears ringing for minutes afterward. Let's also not forget that Rolston has a heavier shot than a lot of the guys on NYI.

Islanders Injury Update:
  • (BPT) Mark Katic (shoulder surgery)- on IR
  • (BPT) Rhett Rakhshani (knee)- on IR
  • (NYI) Nino Niederreiter (groin) - on IR
  • (NYI) Milan Jurcina (groin)- DTD
  • (NYI) Rick DiPietro (Concussion) DTD
From The Skinny:

The Isles scratched Blake Comeau (healthy), Milan Jurcina and Rick DiPietro. Jeremy Colliton has cleared waivers and is now the Captain of the Sound Tigers this season. The Isles have three players on injured reserve: Nino Niederreiter, Rhett Rakhshani and Mark Katic.

Trevor Gillies played last night against the Rangers as well. :)

Me thinks the Islanders need to start looking for more players through free agency and trades that are not as injury prone. But that's just me saying that. Great players only mean much when they aren't hurt. Same with 3rd liners... 2nd liners... 4th liners.... basically half of the Islanders at this point...

Maybe it's Henrik Lundvist (again may be misspelled)...

LOL- nah, Hank likes going up against DiPi- you can tell.

Im thinking of someone who doesnt like the match-up and has an inherent issue with Rick. So Id probably peg it more on Luongo than Henrik. "I'm number one! Not you, Rick- me! ME!1!!!!1!"

 Seriously though-
Ricks skating again- and he feels good. Id expect him back very soon.

Maybe its Neil Smith? After all, the fact he didn't want to give Rick that contract was part of why he got canned so quickly.

And he has not had an NHL position since. Good theory!

Last night against the Lightning the Isles used the same lineup for the 2nd straight game- meaning that Blake Comeau was healthy scratched again, and that Milan Jurcina (groin) and Rick DiPietro (concussion) were both still out (but they are both practicing and are DTD). The Isles still have three players on IR: Nino Niederreiter (groin), Rhett Rakhshani (knee), and Mark Katic (shoulder)... Rhett and Katic both bring Bridgeport guys who cannot be sent to Bridgeport until they are off IR and will remain up with the Isles as far as the paper trails go until they are healthy again.
