I've got it on good word that Rick DiPietro is seriously giving thought to retiring at the end of this season... the rest of which appears doubtful that he would make a return to, given his latest setback in his recovery of a groin injury.

Stay tuned.

Sad news. I was always pulling for DiPietro and hoping that things would eventually get on track for him.

NOOOOO! It can't end like this! Not so soon! There was so much schadefreude left to be had here!
Every year was the Brett Favre story! Would he return? Or the Peyton Manning Story! How many games would he play this year?

I feel so bad for him.
At the same time, I think this is probably better... :(

Its a shame. If it weren't for the injury ninja subletting from DP, he could have had a great career.

But seriously, he got injured while on IR? The dude is cursed!

As much as I feel bad...he should have retired a long, long time ago. Due to his contract, as well as rumors that the brass forced coaches to play him more I really was hoping he'd call it quits sooner than later. It's obvious he will never live up to his potential due to so many injuries and I think it's time for the Isles to finally move on. Plus it gets tiring to hear year after year people taking cracks at us cause he's hurt again. I wish him the best but seriously he needs to retire. NYI goaltending can then finally move on.

Does he have the record for most time injured throughout career? He shouldn't retire till he gets that.

pretty sure Marty Havlat, for one, could give him a run for his money.

DiPietro never started! lol

Anyway, still tough, he had the talent to be a solid tender, I just hope he does what's best for his life.

It must be a real conflict. He'd be walking away from millions of guaranteed dollars by retiring unless they can get him classified as retiring due to injury, which I think would be really hard to get done from the insurance company's standpoint. With so long and so much left, I'm sure the insurance company would want him to keep trying to come back to reduce what they might have to pay.

Fans tend to have fun with it for the most part, but most of us have no idea what it feels like to be in pain for as long as DiPietro has.

Cest la vie . . . I think it is time to call it a career. It's a shame for him but it seems like it is time for him to move on to the next phase of his life. Good luck, Rick.

Its easy for any of us to say "move on, bye bye" when its not us doing the moving on.
I cant imagine what it would be like electing to turn away from something thats defined my entire life.

Rick will be back next season... and this will start over again, just like it did this season.
We will see if he can cut it then. Like it or not, I think that IS what is going to happen.

I know what you are saying, TMC. I by no means mean it would be easy for him to just say he's done. But how many more injuries and surgeries can his body withstand? I wish him all the best because he is a class act of a guy. But it just isn't looking good to me.

I read somewhere (sorry, I didn't save the reference site) that DiPietro was shocked to find out he'd be retiring at the end of this season, and said he had no intention of retiring.

I think it's a tragically sad story to be honest. I do poke fun at him like many others because I really don't know how to put it into any serious context that isn't whiskey-guzzling depressing.

Rick is focusing on his surgery and on coming back to play after surgery. I dont blame him- you always want to have a goal. I just dont know if his motivation and determination will be enough to make it happen.

from Dave Caldwell of the New York Times,

Rick DiPietro, the oft-injured, 30-year-old goaltender still only six years into a 15-year, $67.5 million contract, would not play in the team’s 5-4 victory over Winnipeg, and he will not play in the season finale Saturday in Columbus. He appeared in only eight games this season.

DiPietro did not play at all after having sports hernia surgery in January, but he has recovered and has resumed working out with Mike Dunham, the goaltender coach. He said he feels fantastic, good enough to play in a game and eager for training camp.

“I talked to Snowy about maybe putting me in some bubble wrap throughout the summer to make sure nothing happens,” DiPietro said, referring to General Manager Garth Snow. He added: “I wish the season could start right now.”

Later, he said: “I’ve had every joint and ligament surgically repaired. There’s not much left to do, so, hopefully, this is the last one, and that’s it.”
