From the Sun Sentinal:

…Toronto was next. He was 23.

“They said how I was a screw that didn’t fit their screwdriver,” he said. “I was put on the third-line with AHL players. Wasn’t used on power plays. There’s no reason to get into all of it. But they had lost a lot of draft picks, and they could trade me for some draft picks. So I was gone.”

To Philadelphia this time. To the third line again. This was the middle of last season. He still finished off his third straight year of scoring 20-plus goals.

“I got along great with the coach, and the organizaiton, and they asked me what I thought I was capable of doing,” Versteeg said. “They told me I’d be in their plans. This was at the year-end meeting. Two months later, I was traded.”

No matter how true the bolded part of the statement might be, you'd have to be an absolute piece of shit to come out and say something like that publicly.

Steeger is the man. Don't hate.

Also, did you mean to bold the power play part? Not sure how that part makes him a POS. As for the AHL comment, I'd be curious to know who he played with.

Why?
They were critical of him, why can't he be critical of how he was treated?

I don't think the team was critical of him. Their stance was that he simply didn't fit in with his teammates. And we can now see why.

Yeah if he's calling his linemates AHLers, I can easily see why he didn't fit in with the team.

For what it's worth Versteeg was bounced around 2nd line and first for a while too. If he didn't click that's exactly what happened. He wasn't a top line player in Chicago either nor Philadelphia so what is the point exactly? Given the right chemistry and icetime he could have or should have been blossoming as a top line player all along? That can be said about pretty much anybody. Looking at players like Nik Antropov, Matt Stajan, Alex Ponikarovsky, Kyle Wellwood, and the list could go on and on... some players given top line duty can make things happen and in different situations they can perform completely differently.

I don't see guys like Lupul going back to Anaheim, Edmonton and Philly saying "see, you could have had this...!"

Versteeg was slotted on Kessel's wing to start the season. Kulemin, Grabbo and MacArthur were on the 2nd line. The 2nd line clicked and remained together for the duration of the season. However, Versteeg was useless on his off wing and had zero chemistry with Phil Kessel which resulted in him playing on a 3rd line for much of the season.

But beyond the parts of the story that aren't being told, and despite the fact that I happen to cheer for the Leafs, a player may justify his poor production on a lack of ice-time, or from being from miss-cast by his coaching staff, but he should never publicly pin the blame on his line mates, current or past. It shows a real lack of character.

Versteeg played for two teams last season... neither of which thought enough of him to retain his services. And while he had a good start for the Panthers, he ain't looking so hot these days either.

He's been a -9 over the past month.
