Ok well, agree to disagree. I'd take my franchise in a different direction, but I'm not now, nor will I ever be an NHL GM. I've put together some slick teams on Xbox, but my resume ends there

I understand the notion itself, but the thing is that this cannot be done perpetually, or else you never GET anywhere. The Isles have literally 2 players left from 3-4 years ago... they have already been doing the whole "get rid of everyone, draft kids, and employ placeholders while they develop" thing since 08. Those kids are finally trickling into the NHL, and they cant forever play with other players barely old enough to buy a beer and guys nearly (or over) 40! The Isles organization has barely any guys who are older than 26 and younger than 36! They also have a difficult time getting FAs under 35 to sign here. At some point, you need to focus less on picking out seeds for your garden and start focusing more on (1) nurturing the sprouts that are popping out of the ground and (2) enjoying the bounty of the plants that are growing strong. I hope that makes sense to you because thats really what Im getting at.

You just dont build a franchise by getting little kids, then when kids are finally getting into their prime and doing something getting rid of them and getting more kids. I dont care that the Isles didnt draft PAP, that doesnt matter. He is a kid who developed for years and is finally paying off. Thats exactly who you hold on to to play with your kids. I dream of the day when the Isles have guys like PAP as their vets in a few years- guys who have been here and produced- instead of bringing in guys on their last hockey breaths as stopgaps waiting for teenagers to be old enough and big enough and tough enough to play in the NHL.

PA is a vet for the most part. He is 28 and arguably isn't going to get any better than he already is. Furthermore I seriously doubt there are many teams in the NHL who are going to give him almost 19 minutes a night when he never kills penalties. If anything this is probably more of a reason to keep him.

1. The Isles have next to no vets in the top 6 which is what they need to succeed now.
2. Most teams will discount his value because he won't see the ice time elsewhere and few clubs will see him as a top line winger.
3. The return probably won't be good enough to make a deal worthwhile right now to the Isles given that they don't really need any more picks or unproven prospects.

Personally I would retain PA because I would want to compete next season and let the youngsters push PA out of the lineup and dump him on a deadline deal later.

He is a great setup man who is excelling in Long Island because he is getting an opportunity to play a role he probably won't get anywhere else.

Of course he is- even though this is only his 2nd season as an NHL player, my point is that he is one of VERY few guys his age in this organization. And over the next few years as kids come into this team, they need to play with someone in the mid/late 20s to early 30s range, they cant just play with other kids and old guys.

I agree which is why I think they should/will re-sign him. However, I think a deal longer than the 2-3 year range and greater than 4 mil would be a mistake. I think there are too many options that will pass PA over the next couple years on the depth chart. Therefore knowing this if Snow knows PA wants a longer deal, lets say 4-5 years, or money in the 4.5-5 mil ballpark then maybe you have to look at the market. Heck, if someone is offering me a 1st rounder and a prospect or young NHLer for him I may have to take it. The Isles have the cap space to replace this guy this summer if they wish to spend it. It is an option just one I doubt they will use.

Heard today that PA doesn't want to negotiate until this summer which tells me he might consider the market. Knowing that I might have to deal him now given the way the team lost today and still being so far out.

That actually is not what was said. Walsh, PAPs agent (not PAP himself), recently said that they will listen if the Isles want to negotiate right now, but that PAP doesnt want to pursue it himself if the Isles prefer to wait- because he wants to focus on getting the team into the playoffs. He also said that PAP is "highly motivated" to stay right where he is. PAP has also said himself that he wants to remain an Islander and looks forward to signing a contract here. Walsh also said that PAPs focus is on getting a deal done with the Islanders before July 1.

Thats completely different than PAP saying, "I do not want to negotiate with the Islanders".

I didn't hear PAP say he didn't want to negotiate with the Isles. I just heard he wanted to wait. To me if the Isles wish to retain him then this is a bad move because if his pace keeps up his value increases and I don't think PAP has any value to this organization at anything more than 4 mil per year and on a 2 year deal. The longer it plays out the more likely PAP gets more money and a longer term.

P.A. Parenteau spent the weekend with his left leg in a walking boot, not exactly a fitting end to his best NHL season. The 29-year-old wing is entering this offseason with a chance to earn his biggest payday after totaling 18 goals and 49 assists, but he still hopes his agent and the Islanders can agree on a deal well before he hits the open market July 1.

If Islanders don't get him signed by July 1 Parenteau will be one of the hottest assets available and he will get solid offers

I personally think Garth will do whatever to keep PAP. No way he lets him go without a fight.

When agent Allan Walsh was asked tonight about PAPs status and where his head is right now, this is what he had to say:

#Isles The only thing PA Parenteau is focused on at this time is returning to the NYI. #Islanderheart.
