Wild defenseman Jared Spurgeon has a concussion and could be finished for the season, and coach Mike Yeo is upset with the elbow that caused it all.

It happened 7 minutes, 57 seconds into Thursday's game with Calgary at Xcel Energy Center when Flames forward Alex Tanguay caught Spurgeon in the head with an elbow that Yeo called "dirty."

"It's a flying elbow," Yeo said of the hit. "The elbow is extended, and almost above his head. It's almost above the player's head -- not Jared Spurgeon's head -- when it makes contact. So this is twice now we've lost Jared Spurgeon -- who is really an underrated player around this league, and an incredibly important piece to our lineup -- off dirty hits, real bad hits, this year."

Elbow? It looked like his forearm to me. And it didn't look like alot of impact either. Not sure how a concussion can happen from this. :insomnia: If concussions are truly happening from hits like this then hockey helmets as we know it need to be redesigned from the ground up.

Anyone with motorcycle experience and especially racing experience knows a helmet must fit extremely snug. So snug it should squeeze your cheeks. In order for a helmet to work as an actual protection device it cannot move or bounce around from the skull or it becomes another object being slammed into the skull!!!

I do not see this at all from hockey helmets...even if the players used the straps properly if they just nod their head up and down their helmets usually move. These current helmets are nothing more than a hard hat and not a true impact/crash protection device which they obviously need to be! Somebody needs to really push for a new design! :angry2: *Looks at NHLPA*

That hit didn't look that hard, but it sure looked dirty as hell to me. What the hell is Tangs flying into another guy elbow first like that? And it does look like more forearm than elbow, but still, dirty.

Actually, helmets are designed very well, many players simply refuse to fit them and snug them adequately because they are a bit uncomfortable (or perhaps vain). I love Ryan Smyth, but he is one of the worst. He is so lucky he hasn't had a serious concussion in his career.

When a helmet is just on the edge of being uncomfortable that's when it means it's on/fits properly. lol.
Something needs to be done about it either way. A new design or make the players wear it properly. They're just getting concussions to freaking easy nowadays.

What gets me is you look at a guy like Crosby, with so much on the line, and he still wears his chin strap hanging low.. It makes you wonder if he is not already a little loopy..

Yeah, I don't get it. You would think the coaches would make these guys wear them properly. I remember in Little League baseball when I was 9 years old the coach would line us all up sometimes and do a "cup check". Just seeing the guy who wasn't wearing his double over in pain was enough to make me always wear mine. :pinch:

Nowadays that'd probably get a coach thrown in jail or sued into oblivion. :disgust1:

His arm was up, you guys are right on that one.

Still not a major impact at all though, so I'm not sure the in game penalty wasn't enough.
