The San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings may have clinched a playoff spot well before Thursday's game ended, but they certainly didn't play like it. It was a hard-fought battle right to the final horn and then some, with the Sharks narrowly edging their divisional rivals 6-5 in a shootout.

But don't let the high score fool you into thinking there weren't any big defensive plays. Why, Ryane Clowe's pokecheck on Jarrett Stoll with 3 minutes to go in the 3rd period stands out, and not just because it broke up a very threatening-looking 3-on-2 rush and potentially saved a game-winning goal. It was also the fact that Clowe was on the bench at the time:

At first, I thought Clowe was the one getting on the ice and figured it was a "too many men" call that the team got away with. Upon the second angle, you can clearly see he just checks from the bench.

I can't believe 3 Kings caught him, and not one official.

I couldn't believe my eyes when they replayed it.

I don't t know what the hell he was thinking. Had the refs caught it, it would've been a penalty and why would you put your team in that position for something so stupid? I wouldn't be surprised if it gets some kind of review. As a fan of the game, I can't condone that kind of behavior, I don't care who did it.

It also doesn't surprise me that the refs missed it, it was a poorly officiated game on both sides IMO.

That being said, I'm still glad we won. It was a hard fought game and we came out the winner. Too bad it was a shootout win.

Go Sharks!

What a dumb thing to do with the game on the line. I wouldn't be surprised if the league reviewed it and fined him.

My thoughts too. The Kings were crazy dangerous on the PP, and that could have given them another 5 on 3. He's really lucky he got away with it. And I keep reading in other places, people calling for a suspension, but at most he would get a fine. I don't think anything will happen though.

lol @ all the suspension talk. If anyone should be suspended, it's Clifford and his intent to injure. The Kings were getting away with just as much shit as the Sharks even though the Sharks seemed to always get the extra punishment in any altercation.

I'm playing the littlest violin I could find for LA.

I think this is deserving of a suspension. For the refs though, not Clowe.

I concur, it was a horribly officiated game right from the start.

I laughed, I'm still bitter with bad refs and Doughty, the tables has turned. :teehee:

It seems a new stick manufacturer has come out of the woodwork to create a new stick for Ryane Clowe. Though a beta stick, they have dubbed it the "The Extendo 2012" in honor of Ryane's most recent efforts against the Kings. "This should allow Ryane to exert less effort when reaching over the boards to deflect a puck and thereby reducing back injury from over-extending himself over the dashers". Though this stick is blue, Ryane has requested a white version as disguise against the ice and dashers. A company spokesperson has suggested that Ryane may use the stick tonight against the Kings.
