Seven years ago today, Rangers defenseman Marek Malik made NHL history by ending a 15-round shootout with an unforgettable between-the-legs goal that beat Washington goaltender Olaf Kolzig for a 3-2 victory in what still stands as the league's longest shootout.
Malik's goal, known among teammates as "The Move", was one of two remarkable moments in the shootout. The other came in Round 14, when another defensive-minded defenseman, Jason Strudwick, scored to keep the shootout alive.
Jaromi Jagr, who was in the midst of a phenomenal 54-goal, 123-point season, but who was denied by Kolzig in the shootout, said after the game, "You have to have guts to do that move. In front of 20,000 people watching you, it's not that easy to do."
