The Toronto Marlies aren't taking any chances with standout defenceman Jake Gardiner.

The 22-year-old blue-liner did not skate with the AHL team Wednesday, still shaken following a big hit in a game Saturday against Rochester.

Marlies coach Dallas Eakins says Gardiner is suffering symptoms consistent with a concussion, though the injury hasn't been labelled as such.

The Toronto Marlies will be without injured defenceman Jake Gardiner until after Christmas.

Gardiner has been suffering from a sore neck and headaches since receiving a blindside hit against Rochester on Dec. 8. While the Marlies haven't confirmed Gardiner suffered a concussion, coach Dallas Eakins is playing it safe with the team's top defenceman.

If Gardiner is not ready to start the season and it looks like that will be the case. Rielly likely gets the 5 game tryout as his replacement. They play a similar style of game.

Gardiner was interviewed today regarding his take on the Burke firing.

When asked if he would be ready to start the season, he replied, "I hope so."

Theres so many symptoms that a player gets or has with a con. and are so frequent its hard to tell the degree.

Jake Gardiner is making strides towards a return but remains doubtful to suit up on Saturday.

The Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman skated with the team on Tuesday but did not take part in the full practice session.

Gardiner, who is recovering from post-concussion symptoms, has yet to be cleared for contact.
