With the 2013 NHL season just days away, I thought it would be nice to take a look around the St. Louis Blues roster and highlight some of the players that fans should keep an eye on this season.

T.J. Oshie

Last season T.J. Oshie was given a “prove it” contract from GM Doug Armstrong, and Oshie did just that. Playing in 80 gmaes last season, Oshie tied for the most points on the St. Louis Blues with 54. In that season, Oshie netted 19 goals and 35 assists, impressive numbers on a team that struggled offensively all of last season. In the offseason Oshie was rewarded for his work and was given a five year contract. A fan favorite, now with the Blues for the next five season, Oshie really needs to step up and show the city of St. Louis and Coach Hitchcock that he has what it takes to be a first line player all season. The chemistry that Oshie had with Backes last season signaled that the St. Louis Blues had finally found the dominant first line that they were looking for and gave hope to many that the team was on their way to growing up and becoming a powerhouse again in the Western Conference. I expect that Oshie and his line mates will be seeing a lot of ice time this year and the younger players on this team should have the energy to keep up with the pace of a shortened season. While last year Oshie proved himself, this year he should make a name for himself.

Let's see if the Blues will continue where they left off.

Even though I agree with the top 5 for the most part, I think we need to look at Brian Eliott, as a 3b, I know everyone expects Halak to just step up and take back the #1 job and leave elliott back on the bench, but, both keepers are signed for two seasons and this isn't elliott's first time at the helm, and brian has something to prove after the lackluster playoff showing last season. As both keepers has similar contracts lengths and are 27, I think we need to seriously look at both canidates and make sure we pick the right one to be the near future of the Note in Net, till Allen or binngton are ready to make a run for the net and Halak/elliott to step back and be a vet backup and help pass the torch when the time comes.

I still don't understand why some fans have a problem with Halak and Elliot sharing the net. I'm not saying we have to use them in the same number of games, but debating over who should be our starter just doesn't make much sense to me. Just my opinion though

Yes, in theory, I understand and agree with you, tom. Whatever is best for the team is what we should do. However, in the real skeam of things, since both are under contract till the end of next season, and whoever you do pick to keep, as the odds are very slim you will be able to keep both as they will be due a decent size payday and they both want the chance to be a #1, you will need to eventually give more time to make sure they can handle the larger workload, and make them feel like the #1. Also, you need to start deciding one or the other for the fact of who you don't want to keep, you need to start shopping him to get something in return and keep the blues from having a gapping hole in the goaltender depth chart, unless they think Allen or mckennia, even though he's only signed this season, will be a suitable back up. or there is the outside chance we can find a decent FA goalie for a fair price, but you never fully know what the market will look like just to take that risk. So, I know this sounds weird, but we need to do both, we need to play both in order to showcase one for a trade, but you need to pick one or the other for the long term development of the Blues goaltending position.

That I can understand. I don't always take into consideration how long a particular player has left on his contract, until somebody else does. One of my weak spots I guess.

With the condensed schedule I would expect to see them both in net quite a bit.
