Things like this are what make hockey fighting seem über-lame.

Tanner Glass and Arron Asham decided to drop the mitts off the opening faceoff in New York tonight. Why? Nobody knows. Was it worth it? Probably not. Will anyone remember this at the end of the game — a game which has seen four goals in the first period? Nope.

Scripted fights with no context and no consequences. Get ‘em in ya.

Because these guys have to justify their places on the roster? And as a former Penguin/Flyer/Devil/Islander, Asham really needs to get on the good side of the Rangers faithful?

Yeah, opening faceoff fights aren't as exciting as others. And even then, they're getting less fun to watch. There's very little punching, way too much clutching and grabbing, and they're dragged on for way too long. Nobody wants to see a grapple-fest for two minutes in which five punches are thrown.

Why fans think a three-minute slapfest is worthy of being fight of the year, I'll never know. Just once I'd like to see a short, straightforward, honest fight, with the players actually making an effort to land some punches. Refs that don't wait an entire minute of inactivity to break it up would help too. If nothing lands in ten-fifteen seconds, just step between them and end it. If they aren't going to try to take each other down, they shouldn't have dropped the gloves in the first place.

Especially if it's an opening-faceoff fight. It's hard to get me hyped for the game when it starts with two idiots trying to relive their childhood playground brawls.

Well if last year is any indication, it will probably happen during a lot of divisional games in the Atlantic....

I'm not too happy about them either, anymore.

Two actually... and a third one that attempted to get started but they both got thrown in the box with the others before they could even get their fight going.

Too early in the season for these opening faceoff bouts. If this were the second or third meeting, and there was some bad blood because of a hit or nastiness in an earlier game, then I'd be a little more accepting of a fight 1 or 2 seconds into the game.

Not a lot more, just a little.

Matty Martin said that it started because the Lightning put some scrappers out there that were opening their mouths, and he wanted to answer to that and get the coliseum rocking. I understand what hes saying, but I still agree that it is a strange thing to happen when theres no bad blood/history between the players in question.

I remember a time when fights weren't about "getting the barn rocking".

They used to be about two guys that were angry at each other.

Ahhh... the good ole days.

I prefer fights that are a result of anger and frustration from the game as well, but I'll still watch the staged one!

I only like fights when it is during the passion of the game, during the opening face off there is no excitement yet. BLAH!!!

i tuned in late and just caught the tail-end of one before turning away.

I think we should count them throughout the season.

The Detroit game makes 3 games that have done it...

It was interesting listening to Keith Jones and Mike Milbury talk about it last night during the intermission. Milbury said it was stupid and contributes to giving the league a bad reputation and Jones said he liked it because it gets the fans into the game right away. Its hard to agree with Milbury, but I have to in this case.

Hey look! Another one in the Isles game today...

There was a reason though. The Lightning always come out flat on the Island, so it was an attempt to get them fired up for a change.

I guess they should have saved it for the second period. That's where they needed the boot in their ass. :disgust1:
