'We’re aware of the deadline, and we know what we have to do to get it to the finish.' -- Prospective Coyotes owner Greg Jamison.

Eighteen days after he put forth a two-to-three-week timeline for closing the deal, prospective Coyotes owner Greg Jamison had nothing new to report when we caught up with him on Thursday.

"We’re working to finish this,” he said. “We’re aware of the deadline, and we know what we have to do to get it to the finish."

After approving a $308 million arena management deal in late November, the Glendale City Council gave Jamison until Jan. 31 to buy the team -- a deadline Jamison still believes is firm. That gives him one week to close the deal.

Jamison still needs approval from the NHL Board of Governors, but that is widely viewed as a mere formality if he can bring the rest of the deal’s many moving parts to the finish line, including his investors.

It’s been an arduous and long process for Jamison, whose name first surfaced nearly a year ago. He’s faced challenges assembling investors and securing financing, he’s faced legal road blocks from citizens groups and the ever-watchful eye of the Goldwater Institute, he’s faced the uncertainty of Glendale politics -- and then the league and players threw a lockout at him.

One thing he has tried to avoid is a string of updates providing a very public view of the sales process. As he has stated multiple times, that is simply not his style. As a shrewd and experienced businessman, he prefers an understated approach. In other words, when there’s something to report, he’ll report it.

In all our conversations with him, he has consistently outlined the possibility that this deal may not happen. But again, that is his experience as a businessman talking, not his concern that the deal will fall through.

He remains confident it will happen. He understands Coyotes fans would like some assurances, but with a week left, those will come in short order.

Given the way the Coyotes roll, however, we may not know until Jan. 30 or Jan. 31.

I'm pretty sure that, the way this saga has gone, the "what they have to do" = "sell souls to devil".

Clock ticks down for Phoenix Coyotes deal
Weiers, a council newcomer, said he made that point clear to Jamison during their discussion.

“I told Jamison that as opposed as I was to the deal — I thought that the city didn’t get a very good deal out of it — the fact is that the council made that decision. The deal that was made said that he has until the 31st to put it together. I’ll honor that, but I also told him that I wouldn’t honor it one second past that,” Weiers said.

Officials unsure if Jamison will meet Coyotes deadline

Jamison, former CEO of the San Jose Sharks hockey franchise, has been working behind the scenes for more than a year to assemble a group of investors to buy the Coyotes from the NHL, which bought the team in bankruptcy court.

New Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers said he has his doubts about whether Jamison actually will be able to pull it off by Thursday.

"For the life of me, I can't figure why, if everything is lined up, if he's got the money in hand, why would he postpone this? That's the only thing I haven't been able to figure out," Weiers said. "What would be the purpose of delaying it?"

The mayor said he asked Jamison that very question last week. Weiers said Jamison responded that he was optimistic about completing the sale but offered no details.

Neither Jamison nor league officials offered any explanations about the seemingly slow negotiations when asked by The Arizona Republic last week.

Jamison said, "We're aware of what we have to do to get this closed. We're working very hard to get there. So far, the anticipation is that we will get there. That's kind of where we're at, at the moment, and I probably wouldn't take it much further than that."

He declined further comment.

And then there's this:

Coyotes announcement due this week, Jamison says

Prospective Phoenix Coyotes owner Greg Jamison told The Arizona Republic on Monday that he expects to complete his purchase of the team on Wednesday or Thursday this week, just ahead of a crucial deadline associated with Jobing.com Arena in Glendale.

(Special note to Seattle and Canadian hockey fans who were hoping to snare a vagabond Coyotes franchise: Insert your curses in either English or French here.)

Jamison needs to buy the team from the NHL by Thursday to secure a 20-year deal with the city to use and manage the 17,250-seat arena. The deal will pay him about $15 million a year to book concerts and non-hockey events into the facility. If he blows the deadline, the agreement will vanish.

Jamison vowed that he’ll meet the deadline. “There’s a lot happening. We’re moving forward. There will be an announcement before the end of the week,” Jamison said Monday morning.

Really? An announcement this week?

“Yes, there will. There certainly will,” he said.
