From canadiens.nhl.com

Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin announced Monday the signing of defenseman P.K. Subban to a two-year contract (2012-13 to 2013-14). As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Subban, 23, notched 36 points (7 goals, 29 assists) in 81 regular season games in 2011-12. He tied for second on the team with five powerplay goals. The second-year defenseman also served 119 penalty minutes and registered 205 shots on goal, ranking him seventh among NHL defensemen, and led the Canadiens with an average of 24:18 of ice time per game. Subban led the Canadiens for most powerplay ice time with 283 minutes and 4 seconds.

Since making his NHL debut with the Canadiens back in 2009-10, Subban has registered 76 points (21 goals, 55 assists) in 160 regular season games. The 6’0’’, 206 lbs defenseman has scored 14 of his goals on the powerplay, and has three game-winning goals. Subban has served 245 penalty minutes and owns a plus-2 plus/minus differential. He has tallied three goals and 12 points in 21 NHL playoff games, including two with the man advantage. Subban was voted to the NHL All-Rookie Team following the 2010-11 season.

A native of Toronto, Subban was the Canadiens’ third selection (second round, 43rd overall) at the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. Prior to making his debut at the professional level, Subban played with the OHL’s Belleville Bulls and earned a gold medal with Canada at the 2008 and the 2009 World Junior Hockey Championships.

Here's some more info from TSN.

The Montreal Canadiens have signed defenceman P.K. Subban to a two-year contract worth a total of $5.75 million.

A restricted free agent, Subban sat out the first four games of this season while the two sides negotiated a contract.

Subban's new deal carries an average annual value of $2.875 million, and will pay the defenceman a pro-rated $2 million this season and $3.75 million in 2013-14.

“I'm extremely happy to be at this point now where the past is behind us and I can look forward to be integrated into the team and after their great start to the season,” Subban said in a statement released by the team's official Twitter account.

"With this process, I understand everybody will have their opinion, but my focus is getting on the ice and helping this team win," the statement continued. "This is where my heart is, in Montreal."

The P.K. Subban contract negotiations finally came to an end on Monday and while the Canadiens were reportedly steadfast on the two-year term, many were surprised that Subban agreed to sign for a total of only $5.75 million.

With a number of young players (Jamie Benn, Jordan Eberle, Taylor Hall, etc.) getting new deals in the past year, it was expected the Canadiens would reward Subban handsomely in his next contract.

The 23-year-old is considered one of the best young defenceman in the league and it appears the Canadiens were able to lock him up at a bargain price.

With that in mind, we take a look at how Subban's new contract compares with others around the NHL.

What Marc Bergevin really wanted was some time.

Time to see P.K. Subban with his own eyes. To experience what others have told him about the talented kid who likes the spotlight perhaps a little too much, who rubs his teammates the wrong way at times.

Are they just rumours? Anyone who played 1,191 NHL games, as Bergevin did, knows that Subban's rep probably runs deeper than just superficial rumours.

On top of what he'd heard, there was also that little nugget this first-year general manager Bergevin knew:

Superficial rumors.

Who knew that the Habs have drafted a Muhammad Ali-type?

Wow. Subban signed for way less than I thought he would fetch. Really nice for the Habs.

He is definitely gone in two years after this contract, he just signed to play hockey, he wanted a lot more.

Nah, I don't think so. It's been the Habs' practice in recent years to do bridge contracts, and I think that's gonna continue here with Subban.

See I think they just got on his nerves with this deal. I mean Del Zotto got a small pay rise too, but maybe it's the new NHL CBA agreement and they are back to getting low amounts.

GP G A P PIM +/-

Subban 81 7 29 36 119 9

White 77 7 25 32 22 23

Del Zotto 77 10 31 41 36 20

Yeah you guys are right, I'd much rather have White or Del Zotto over P.K Subban. 119 PIM?! That's a liability too me, if it wasn't for his 36 points, he would have been a minus.
