The Dallas Stars have placed veteran winger Ray Whitney on injured reserve with a lower body injury, the team announced on Saturday, with rookie Reilly Smith recalled from the Texas Stars to likely take his spot on the second line.
Whitney has been playing through an undisclosed foot injury since the second game of the season that likely resulted from a blocked shot. The 40-year old veteran leads the Stars in points with two goals and four assists through eight games and has provided some needed veteran leadership on a team going through a tough transition to start the season.
The Stars beat the Phoenix Coyotes on Friday night in the shootout, 4-3, with Whitney picking up an assist and record two shots. Whitney has not played in less that 66 games in the past six seasons and has proven more than resilient in the latter part of his long career.
Reilly Smith is second in scoring for the AHL's Texas Stars with 11 goals and 27 points in 38 games. In six games with the Dallas Stars this season, Smith has no points and is a minus-1.
