From NHL.com.

Season series: This is the first of three meetings. The Islanders swept the four-game season series in 2011-12.

Big story: New York tries to end its four-game losing streak, and a home game against Carolina is coming at just the right time as the Hurricanes have lost four straight to the Islanders.

Team Scope:

Hurricanes: Carolina plays the fifth of sixth straight road games when they visit Uniondale on Monday, and will try to earn two more points on what has been a successful trip thus far. While the Hurricanes battled back to force overtime in their last game against the Flyers on Saturday, they couldn't grab the extra point as a Danny Briere snap shot that beat Cam Ward resulted in a 4-3 loss.

"All in all, we pick up a point here on the road on a long road trip, which is great," coach Kirk Muller said. "Defensively, we've got to continue to win more battles."

Islanders: Usually, when a team outshoots its opponent 43-15, there is a very good chance that it will win most of those games. But the Islanders found themselves on the losing end of a 4-3 decision at home against the Sabres on Saturday despite nearly tripling the shot output of Buffalo.

While the Islanders are still trying to break out of their current funk, they now have key players back in the lineup, including defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky and forward Josh Bailey, who both made their season debuts Saturday.

"It was a good start. Hopefully I can build off it," Bailey told newyorkislanders.com Saturday. "Vish played a great game as well. You look at him and you can see he’s definitely going to help our squad."

Who's hot: Ward is unbeaten over his last three games for the Hurricanes with 114 total saves over that span. … Captain John Tavares has five points (4g, 1a) in his last five games for the Islanders.

Injury report: Besides a long-term injury to forward Tuomo Ruutu (hip), the Hurricanes are fully healthy. … With Bailey and Visnovsky back in the lineup, the Islanders expect to be operating with a full team Monday.

Lets hope for a repeat of the 2010-2011 season, not the 2011-2012 season.

From NHL.Com

DiPietro to start in Islanders' goal

The New York Islanders announced goaltender Rick DiPietro will make his second start of the season when the team faces the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday.

In DiPietro's previous game this season, Jan. 25 against the Boston Bruins, he allowed four goals on 27 shots in a 4-2 loss.

Due to a series of injuries, it will be just the 49th game DiPietro has played in since the start of the 2008-09 season. He's spent this season watching as Evgeni Nabokov has gotten the majority of the playing time.

"I think he's been handling it fine," Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. "He obviously hasn't played a lot, but at the same time, he's sharp. He's had a lot of practice time with us now. When you haven't played a lot, obviously practice is what you need. He gave us a chance in Boston, he just got a couple of unlucky bounces."

The loss in Boston was DiPietro’s first appearance since Dec. 3, 2011, when he was injured in a 5-4 victory at Dallas. He's elated at the chance to play.

"This opportunity to feel healthy and practice, and have a chance to come out here and help this team win hockey games is truly a blessing," he said. "I feel good. Hopefully that translates onto the ice."

** Could this end up being a good thing for the Canes tonight :g:

We really have no idea what we will get from Rick other than effort and too much puck handling.
And some grumbling and sarcastic clapping from some fans.

But Nabokov hasnt been looking very good TBH and needs to rest a game.

We will see how it goes.

Islanders PP was red hot tonight, I thought that DP looked a bit rusty but that's bound to happen when you're only playing your second game of the season. Didn't help that his team really didn't help him too much when it was 5 on 5, and the Canes got some very lucky breaks with pucks bouncing off bodies. JT continues his dominance of Ward with a goal and a assist.
