With a rash of injuries on defense, the Carolina Hurricanes have reportedly recalled the 12th overall pick from 2011, Ryan Murphy, from his junior team in Ontario.

Kitchener Rangers head coach/GM Steve Spott confirmed the move.

Carolina recently placed defensemen Tim Gleason and Joni Pitkanen on injured reserve and are currently rolling with a blueline comprised of Jay Harrison, Justin Faulk, Jamie McBain, Joe Corvo, Michal Jordan and Bobby Sanguinetti.

So, no better time than to give Murphy a ring.

And who says this team couldn't get smaller.........

BIG MINUTES FOR MURPHY

Injuries have hit the Carolina Hurricanes' blueline hard, with Joni Pitkanen, Tim Gleason and Jamie McBain all on the shelf, the Hurricanes called up Ryan Murphy from the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League. In three games, Murphy averaged 21:51 of ice time per game, though that included a more reasonable 16:57 per game in his third game.

Gleason is reportedly close to returning, with Pitkanen about a week away, which would figure to put an end to Murphy's time as an emergency recall. While Murphy is a wonderful skater with good puck skills, he's probably not ready for full-time NHL duty if early shot differentials are any indication.

Murphy has 3 more games on the emergency callup before it burns a year of his ELC. He'll go back to juniors here soon.

He'll be the envy of all his team mates when he get's back to Kitchener after playing in the pros.

Hopefully he'll take what he's learned from his short time in the pros and apply it to his time in the Jr's and improve on his game.

You have to love how well he's been playing since being called up.

I'm really impressed with his composure
