Joe needs to be taken out back and shot.......

Michael Ryder, he of 35 goals last season, is being shipped back to Montreal, along with a third round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, for Erik Cole, a former 35-goal scorer in his own right.MTL trades Erik Cole to DAL for Michael Ryder.

Was going to ask your thoughts but this seems to answer it all.
I think Montreal wins in a straight swap of the two but too throw in the 3rd makes no sense whatsoever.

Cole is finished, if you ask me.
This time I'm in on the Joe bashing.

Joe clearly has no concept of how to value his assets. None at all.
Maybe Ryder was going to be allowed to leave after the year. But even if that's true, to pretend like we just got something for nothing is a complete falsehood. The opportunity cost of whomever or whatever you could have gotten for him at the deadline is still omnipresent whether you choose to acknowledge it or not.
Montreal makes that trade even without the draft pick. How the HELL does Joe get fleeced this badly by a guy who's been a GM for exactly one month so far?
This cannot continue. Nieuwendyk just gives assets away as if they were nothing. I cannot even venture a guess at what this haphazardly thrown together team is supposed to be. This franchise has gone nowhere in the past five years and continues to do so. This has to change, and it has to change now.

There is a reason why "Joe" is commonly a plumber and not a General Manager for a professional hockey team.
Ugh.

All that for size?
Damn..

I echo pretty much what everyone on here has said. *heads off to punch wall*

That's what it comes down to it seems.

I'm seriously two seconds away from quitting... "James Neal is too good... Let's trade him." "Ryder has been an awesome addition... We can't have that." $50 says Dillon is on the trading block sometime soon... There is no reason for us to have a good defenseman... Trade him off, and let's go pick up Chelios... I hear he still wants to play
Through last night:
Ryder: 32 years old, 14 points in 19 games on a so so team
Cole: 34 years old, 6 points in 19 games on a red hot team
So what MAYBE could have been a straight up trade, turns into us getting hosed again because we throw in a third rounder also... I'm going to start punching anyone and everyone I meet named Joe from here on out...
My pick for Joe's next move? Benn, Erikkson, and a fourth rounder to LA for Clifford, and free items from the vending machine when visiting the Staples center...

I def think Cole has the ability to contribute (for THIS season), possibly quite a bit more than we think, but this still doesn't make any sense on so many other levels... especially the age factor. this guy isn't helping the future Dallas Stars.

I think he can still contribute as well, but anymore then Ryder was? It's still an odd trade.

Apparently Joe thinks he adds toughness and size........YOU TRADED ALL YOUR FREAKING TOUGH GUYS OR LET THEM LEAVE YOU ASSHAT!!!!
Ott, Fistric, Souray, Burish, and Morrow has almost no presence now. You did that. A 1-for-1 would be questionable. MTL was looking to move him and get cap space. We gave them what they wanted...and gave them a good pick. Sure you can say you wanted Cole for size and strength and that he is tied up for a couple of years. But now you have tied $4.5 million in cap space to an aging power forward. And at that you are buying that he is a top-six forward for at least two more seasons.

Hard to argue with that post.

Don't underestimate Bergevin. The guy fleeced 29 GMs at the last draft table.

UPDATE:
In 8 games with Montreal, Michael Ryder has 9 points.
In 7 games with Dallas Erik Cole has one goal and zero assists.
You may now light yourselves on fire.
