CANUCKS (8-3-4) at STARS (8-7-1)

Erik Cole is set to take the ice for the Dallas Stars, while the Edmonton Oilers are no doubt excited to have one of their top forwards back.

Cole will likely make his Stars debut Thursday night against a visiting Oilers team that will have Taylor Hall return from suspension.

Before Dallas (10-8-2) posted a 5-4 overtime victory at Columbus on Tuesday night, the club announced the acquisition of Cole from Montreal in exchange for fellow right wing Michael Ryder and a third-round draft pick.

Stars general manager Joe Nieuwendyk called Cole a "top-six power forward." Cole had three goals and three assists in 19 games for the Canadiens after matching a career high with 61 points last season.

"I know (Cole) has got a lot of experience," Dallas coach Glen Gulutzan said. "He's won. He's a direct, big, fast-moving skater. I talked to (captain) Brenden (Morrow) a little bit and he said (Cole) is a guy you don't like to play against."

Ryder had been tied for the team lead with 14 points.

"Ryds will be a missed guy here," Gulutzan said. "He's a good guy and a good player, well-liked by his teammates."

Edmonton (7-7-4) is one of the league's lowest-scoring teams at 2.2 goals per game. The Oilers will welcome the return of Hall, who was suspended the last two games after getting ejected for kneeing Minnesota's Cal Clutterbuck in last Thursday's 3-1 home defeat.

Hall is tied for the team lead with 13 assists and his 16 points are second on the Oilers to Sam Gagner's 18.

The Stars have won six straight over the Oilers, including two victories this season - both on the road. Dallas is 10-0-1 in the last 11 home meetings since Edmonton's most recent regulation win in Texas on Dec. 8, 2006.

Stars goalie Kari Lehtonen is expecting to return Thursday after missing five games with a groin injury. Lehtonen, who has posted a 1.19 goals-against average in winning his last five starts against the Oilers, was activated from the injured list Wednesday.

The Oilers, meanwhile, have placed Nikolai Khabibulin on injured reserve and recalled Yann Danis from the minors. Devan Dubnyk will start Thursday, and he's 0-4-1 with a 4.01 GAA in five career starts against Dallas.

Edmonton built a 2-1 after 40 minutes as it opened a nine-game trip with Monday's 3-2 overtime loss at league-leading Chicago. Rookie Nail Yakupov ended a nine-game goal drought.

"Big picture, it's an excellent point against the strongest team in the National Hockey League right now," coach Ralph Krueger said. "Of course you feel pain, having the lead going into the third period."

The Oilers continue to excel on special teams with a power-play percentage of 23.8 and a penalty kill at 86.6 percent. They know they must improve at even strength.

"We just stick with it," Krueger said. "That's 17 out of 18 games where have been one-goal games where we've been in them so we gotta believe we're on the right track."

Jaromir Jagr and Jamie Benn have combined for six points in the season series for Dallas.

Defenseman Mark Fistric will play his first game in Dallas since being traded to Edmonton in January after spending his first five seasons with the Stars.

well... the even newer looking Stars hit the ice tonight.  now that the trade is said and done I'm really rooting for Cole to produce.  I certainly hope that this dumb trade ends up being a stroke of genius somehow....

Reading through articles like this only ever reminds how depressingly unoriginal hockey players are at coming up with nicknames for teammates. Michael Ryder = Ryds?

At least it's better than "Ryderer", which is what I was half expecting.

5-0 with only about 7 minutes left in the game.  Wish I would have watched more of this, but the boy wanted to play C&C.

A bizarre 3rd Oilers goal, by all rights and Jagr ruined Dubey's shutout.

Kind of a gutless play there by Benn.  Jones was going for the rebound and got tripped up by the defenseman and you could even see him apologizing to Lehtonen in the crease.

(Jamie) Benn's play was nothing short of cuntish. If Hall gets 2 games for what he did, Benn should get 5.

Pathetic effort tonight by the Stars, the looked like they played a triple OT game last night. Some of them were half-assing it like it was a practice. And then yes Benn should get 3 games for that stupidity at the end, I bet he gets two.

Time to buy a scratch ticket: the Oilers won a game in Dallas for the first time since 2006. Hell, just beating the Stars is reason enough to think the Earth may have shifted on its axis...

Plus

-Dubnyk played well. Very quiet, very solid.

-Justin Schultz played his best game in a good little bit. Crisp outlet passes and finished off a nice pass from Eberle on a good back door sneak-in.

-4/93/14 controlled the puck well and created the bulk of Edmonton's ES chances.

Minus

-I really don't like Ryan Jones with 89-83.

-Before leaving the game after being boarded by Eric Nystrom, Potter was really struggling in his own end.

-The Stars lack of discipline went a long way towards sealing the deal in this one, but the scoreboard flattered Edmonton a little, when you look at how it went at ES, where the Stars were a bit better.

Ralph Krueger

-It's inexcusable not to find a second for Nail Yakupov to play on a 5-on-3. He's currently their best one-timer option, and the PP represents the only way they've been able to find RW time for him, and Krueger left him in the holster. Yakupov has a shot that can lay waste to opponent penalty killers and not even putting him out there is a complete waste. RFK dropped the ball on that one.

-Sitting PRV was the wrong choice. Period. He continues to move the puck north regardless of which line he's on, and that's something they don't have a lot of after 4-93-14 leave the ice.

You know no one showed up to play for your team when Eager scores against you............ from distance. Glad to see Cole started off well. Didn't even notice when he was on the ice half the time

Benn is a dunce, and was stupid for his actions, wouldn't be surprised to see a suspension, as he should receive... Not called for at all, especially since we were about to go on the job... Benn going after Jones for the goaltender interference was about as stupid as Eager going after Morrow for hitting Smid in the face with his ass...

Dumb all around play, stupid penalties taken, and overall lack of give a shit. Worse loss of the season hands down
